A recent study led by industry expert Keri Putnam reveals a major untapped opportunity in independent film distribution. Currently, 36.7 million Americans engage with indie films—whether in theaters or at home. However, the data shows that 77 million Americans would consider paying for a streaming service focused on independent films and documentaries. That's a staggering gap of 40 million potential viewers who are currently underserved by mainstream platforms. This study underscores an incredible opportunity for those of us passionate about indie film and content creation to innovate and expand access to these unique voices. Black Music Appreciation Month is a time to celebrate the profound impact of Black musicians on American culture, particularly in the realm of music. From the earliest days of rock and roll to the modern era of alternative rock, Black artists have played a pivotal role in shaping the genre and pushing boundaries. The history of alternative rock is deeply rooted in rebellion and counterculture, and Black musicians have been at the forefront of this movement. Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Bo Diddley, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Tina Turner, Jimi Hendrix, and Prince are just a few of the pioneering Black musicians who have left their mark on rock music. Despite the stereotypes that often surround certain genres, Black musicians have consistently demonstrated their ability to create diverse and unique sounds, blending influences from punk rock, hard rock, hip hop, and folk music. The Black Alt-rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s, such as Living Colour, Rage Against the Machine, Fishbone, and Bad Brains, have made significant contributions to the genre, pushing boundaries and blending different styles to create something entirely new. In Denver, artists like Elyjah “Tribe” Youngblood are challenging stereotypes and showcasing the diversity of the music scene. Youngblood, a Black Alt-rock artist, is a prime example of the power of music to challenge the status quo and express individualism. As we celebrate Black Music Appreciation Month, let's take a moment to reflect on the contributions of Black musicians to music and culture, and to recognize the diversity of sounds and styles that make up the rich tapestry of American music. My New Substack essay is The Playbook of Cancellation "There were many instances of people describing how they felt the grievance process had been abused or at the least very poorly managed, with little to no consistency. People often had poorly worded contracts, which often left their artistic work very vulnerable, and were signposted to circular and unending grievance, complaint and disciplinary procedures. These policies often had unclear wording which did not relate to the real world (‘copied and pasted’ was one description) and seemed to be unrelated to the work of the arts and the sensitivities of artists thoughts and works blurring. The application of these policies hardly ever mentioned that they could be abused, or the realisation that false and vexatious complaints could be made.
