Around 2008 I attended a work-shop for Forecasting skills and methods. The presenter started his speech with "Can you imagine Google will be once producing cars?". The vast majority of the audience laughed. This gentleman told us something which I did not fully understand and appreciate at that time. "Your job as finance people is not to guess the future, your job is to model a scenario." I would only add to that "the past does not define the future" or "the more you think you understand and study the past, the more you can be wrong in understanding the future". We live in V.U.C.A world where insisting on hitting the traditional annual budget targets does not make sense any more. This might extend to the supply chain of AI services - sourcing of AI models suddenly might become an existential legal risk to business operations. This scenario underscores the importance of being prepared to prove the provenance of your data to maintain trust and reliability with customers, as well as to safeguard against potential legal challenges.
