A few months ago, I had an interesting conversation with HR about bringing on an apprentice in the next round of recruitment —and it sparked some interesting questions from others in my non-work circle: “Why not a more ‘qualified’ graduate?” For me, in the procurement world, a degree isn’t a great measure of someone’s ability. While I have a bachelors and two master’s degrees plus an alphabet of qualifications behind my name so I know that academic knowledge has its place. In procurement, emotional intelligence, adaptability, creativity and hands-on problem-solving are far more valuable. Not everyone can attend university due to financial or personal barriers. Apprenticeships make procurement accessible to those who may not follow the traditional academic path. This diversity benefits our teams and, ultimately, the supply chains we manage. Diverse perspectives bring innovation, and they help us better serve our increasingly diverse customer base. Procurement needs to move past people “falling” into the profession; it’s a strategic, rewarding career path. Building a team that values practical intelligence, common sense, collaboration, and attention to detail will professionalise the field and open it up to a wider, talented pool. Choosing an apprentice is about finding team members who can excel through real-world experience and passion. Great procurement is accessible to all who bring dedication and practical skills to the table and I'm really looking forward to next year when we start building the role profile before going out to advert ahead of the next academic year. #procurement #apprenticeships #talentdevelopment #inclusivehiring #careergrowth

student's training. The problem identified is the gap between the knowledge/skills students gain during their higher education and the expectations of recruiting organisations which prioritize experienced candidates with updated technological expertise. While internships are mandated by the government and educational institutions to provide practical experience, the internships often do not offer detailed and comprehensive exposure to all aspects of the field particularly procurement cycle, warehouse management, transport logistics where offices may not cover all subsectors probably due to organization specific industry, busy schedules and confidentiality. This gap limits students’ hands-on experience, exposure and hinders their ability to compete for job opportunities that require one of the specific subsector expertise. It’s on these basis above that DESIMA logistics finds it essential to bridge the gap of experience by providing hands-on office practice in procurement cycle, warehouse management, transport logistics, general operations, enlighten students of which opportunities they can peruse, strategic cover letters, professional resume and interview tips. #studentsexternship.
