Yesterday, Bajaj has launched the first-ever CNG-powered motorcycle 🏍️ ⛽️ at an entry price point of INR 95,000. I have tried looking at the registration numbers across the 🇮🇳 states, for both personal cars🚗 and two-wheelers 🏍️ 🛵 , and have tried to correlate the numbers to understand the potential of CNG as a fuel type for two wheelers. India is one of fastest growing car market and there has been a significant adoption of CNG as a fuel type ⛽️. As of June in the CY 2024, CNG accounts for 13% of all new personal car sales in India. However, this figure doesn't fully capture the fuel's potential. The top five car-selling states (UP, MH, GJ, KA & HR) contribute ~75% of total CNG sales. In these states, CNG comprises ~20% of overall personal car sales, compared to the national average of 13%. This high acceptance is primarily due to the well-developed CNG infrastructure in these regions, which boast over ~3,700 CNG refueling stations, accounting for more than 50% of India's total CNG stations. Will two-wheeler customers show similar acceptance? These same five states account for ~40% of total two-wheeler sales, with UP, MH & KA being among the top markets. However, several challenges could hinder the acceptance of CNG-powered motorcycles. These challenges include long queues at filling stations, engine performance issues compared to petrol engines, and inadequate infrastructure in rural regions where motorcycles are prevalent. Despite these challenges, the low running costs, existing CNG infrastructure in urban areas, and decent CNG car penetration in these key states could significantly benefit the adoption of CNG-powered motorcycles as a kick starter.
