With electrification plans in full flow, what a wonderful milestone this is to stop and reflect. JLR have now trained more than 20,000 colleagues and partners in electrification and digital skills as part of its Future Skills Programme! This is around: ☑ 2,400 manufacturing employees in EV skills across UK production facilities. ☑ 95% of JLR’s retail partner technicians. ☑ 3,000 engineers trained in electrification.  ☑ 2,500 in data and digital. ☑ 4,200 JLR and retail partner apprentices and Early Careers employees currently in training. This is SO important to ensure teams across our entire ecosystem are ready. It goes hand in hand with the work we’re doing to transform our facilities for EV production - training is currently underway for 11,000 JLR manufacturing colleagues to build BEVs. As part of the programme, another 15,000 colleagues across manufacturing, engineering and workshops will be trained. The Friday interesting read. As part of the supply chain for the UK Automotive industry, it's good to see the SMMT rallying for further support from the next government over the coming years. MTC secures £1.85m facility for high-risk research activities 🏢🔍 The MTC - Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry has secured £1.85 million from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s Research and Innovation Organisations Infrastructure Fund to build a Hazardous Operations Cell (HazOps) to build and dismantle prototype battery modules and packs based on large format and high power/energy density cells. The HazOps is a new facility designed to fill a significant UK gap in enabling high-risk R&D activities. The facility incorporates advanced robotics, machine vision and laser systems to provide a flexible and remote manufacturing facility for research into hazardous manufacturing processes. The facility provides a UK capability for prototyping battery module and pack designs based on cutting-edge, large format and high power/energy density cells (prismatic, large-format cylindrical). Wrapping up the political conference season and positive engagement with all parties, SMMT was pleased to attend the Conservative Party’s autumn conference in Birmingham this week, meeting with MPs and Peers to discuss the priorities we share. Industry is ready to work quickly with government and cross-party to deliver a faster transition, to deliver a just return on massive investments by manufacturers - returns in the form of decarbonisation, jobs, inward investment, new skills and economic growth. Car and van makers now offer more than 145 new EV models in the UK, innovation that spans the breadth of UK automotive manufacturing. That was evident at SMMT’s Meet the Buyer held in Coventry this week, where an expected 170 meetings involved 10 major components purchasers looking to build new partnerships. England roads to welcome #selfdriving vehicles as Automated Vehicles (AV) Act becomes law. Self-driving vehicles could be on British roads by 2026 following the AV Act becoming law on 20 May. The AV Act enables advanced technology to safely drive vehicles on British roads. Automated vehicles are expected to drastically improve road safety by reducing human error, which contributes to 88 per cent of road collisions. Interesting article from GSF Car Parts but five years ago School of Thought (Automotive) issued a warning to the industry and created a programme to start to address the issue. We have met with GSF Car Parts to discuss how we could work together to help not just GSF but also their customer base. No response to date. School of Thought (Automotive) have spoken about the subject at many industry events including IBIS Global this year, Automechanika UK in 2023 and The Garage and Bodyshop Event in 2022 but also ABP and Bodyshop Magazine in 2019. It’s frustrating and disappointing that senior people and major companies in the industry are only just talking about the problem. At School of Thought (Automotive) we set about trying to address the issue in 2019 for the whole industry. So let’s stop the talking. We did five years ago and have now promoted careers in the industry to thousands of young people but also created a free directory for all companies which we will open up for students in the new school year who will be able to find companies in their local area who can offer work experience or apprenticeships. The words about the Skills Gap have all been heard for years so let’s stop talking, collaborate and start fixing it. There is no short term fix.

Last week, on the BBC news pages, it was announced that there would be a government investigation into vehicle lighting and whether or not brighter lights are causing more glare. 💡 😎 ▪️ The RAC has been campaigning for an investigation after a rise in complaints about glare from motorists. ▪️ Here at Ring Automotive Ltd, we too welcome this review. We want motorists to have safer, better driving experiences. We have been in discussion with the government on what causes glare and what can be the contributing factors for there being an increase in glare. ▪️ Bulbs have got brighter as technology has advanced, but all external vehicle lighting must meet UN ECE regulations! 📋 ✅ It is too easy to say bulbs have got brighter therefore there is more glare. Other causes are: ▫️ Poor quality or non-compliant bulbs being fitted. ▫️ The shear number of speed bumps and pot holes causing lights to move up and down into the field of vision of the driver. ▫️ Non-road legal LED bulbs being fitted instead of the correct ECE approved halogen bulbs. ▫️ Poor fitment where the bulbs are not aligned correctly, resulting in the beam pattern shinning upwards into on coming traffic. ▫️ Auto-dip function on modern vehicles do no react until sensing the on-coming car, causing momentary glare for the other driver. ▪️ It will be interesting to see the outcome of this review next spring and what actions, may or may not need to be taken. 🚘 https://lnkd.in/eGsPuDJz #glare #carbulbs #carlights #cars #Ring #RingAutomotive #saferdriving

We've gained some new followers recently, so if you're new to AutoRaise, here's a quick history of how an idea evolved into a charity supporting apprentices and bodyshops in the auto industry. AutoRaise started as a small working group of vehicle repairers who saw the need for a modern apprenticeship standard. What began in 2012 as an initiative between Fix Auto Dagenham and Barking & Dagenham College has now evolved into a charity with a single mission: to promote the vehicle repair industry as a sustainable and rewarding career path. Chris Oliver and a team of leading repairers helped build a new, government-backed multiskilled apprenticeship framework, setting the stage for today’s Trailblazer Apprenticeship Standards. In 2016, this dedicated group formalised their efforts, becoming a Charitable Incorporated Organisation with a mission to bring new talent into the industry. At AutoRaise, we’re all about engaging young people, nurturing apprentices, and supporting the future owners and leaders of our industry. This is just a snapshot of our history. Hybrid and electric vehicle courses experienced a surge in new learners. The programmes are among a wide range of Engineering and Automotive qualifications to experience a rise in numbers at Coleg Cambria Deeside this academic year. Carl Black, Assistant Principal for the Institute of Technology and Site Lead at Deeside, revealed several cohorts – including the Level 2 Diploma in Engineering – had almost doubled. “Across the board we have seen an increase, notably Engineering but also in Automotive, both in further education and on the apprenticeships side,” said Carl. “There is a lot of demand in these sectors, notably in repair services and manufacturing, and we are well placed to help meet that demand with the experience and facilities we have here at the college.” The Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Repair 2 and 3 qualifications have been particularly successful, with hundreds of learners joining Cambria over the last three years, as well as the Level 4 Award in Diagnosis and Rectification of Faults in Electric and Hybrid Vehicles, a more comprehensive qualification launched 12 months ago. The Institute of the Motor Industry’s (IMI) latest EV TechSafe certification data showed that 58,800 technicians are now qualified to work on electric vehicles (EVs), representing 24% of the UK automotive workforce. Based on the forecasted increase in EVs on UK roads, the IMI is currently predicting a shortfall of 3,000 technicians by 2031, and 16,000 by 2035. APPOINTMENTS: Andrew Brumley appointed head of Ford Motor Company’s Dunton center Andrew Brumley has been appointed as the new head of Ford’s #Dunton product development center in Essex, UK. Brumley, the chief engineer for vehicle hardware engineering, will oversee the integration of physical and digital attributes in future #Transit and #Tourneo vehicles. The Dunton campus employs over 3,200 engineers and commercial vehicle specialists. Ford is focusing on #electrification and incorporating new software and services into its vehicles, which demands new skills and engineering specializations. To support this, the company has established four major education outreach partnerships to increase interest in science, technology, engineering and math (#STEM) among young people.
