Time to reflect on this week's South Yorkshire International Trade Conference. Led by Sheffield Chamber of Commerce with the expertise of Sheffield International Trade Centre-SITC, this years conference saw us host over 135 delegates from across the UK and Europe, all with the common mission of expanding their international trade aspirations. Providing a space for collaboration and knowledge sharing, key discussion points included Brexit and CBAM, customs duties and import taxes, quicker access to export finance, and accelerating growth in international markets, all with an impending change of UK government. As a region, we all agreed it's vitally important that we support the ambitions of our world-renowned manufacturers and exporters, alongside the burgeoning sectors of Ed Tech, Med Tech, and Clean Tech. A joined-up approach from key regional stakeholders is pivotal to providing sustained economic growth through key initiatives such as the Investment Zone. To that end, it was fantastic to have The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, Made In Sheffield, British Chambers of Commerce, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, Doncaster Chamber, and Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce all in attendance offering insight and thoughts. Everything you ever wanted to know about boards but didn't know who to ask. What a great topic for an over lunch speech with the remarkably impressive ladies from the Swiss Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Thanks a million to Martin G. Scarpino GAICD for organising the event. I really want to mention how great the food and service were. Bei Bar and Bistro in Darlinghurst put on an amazing lunch with Swiss Italian inspired food and the tastiest bread with garlic and honey butter that I have ever had. If you go there (and you should) don't skip the bread! Service was friendly and knowledgeable and we were all able to give our full attention to the topic. If you would like to organise a similar event for your group, please let me know. We talked about director duties and liabilities, shareholder v. stakeholder primacy, how to start a board career, the many options for director education and devlopment, what you need to know before you start and what you can learn as you progress, and a few stories about boards that suffered the consequences after doing the wrong thing! #TeamAngus was out today at Arbikie Highland Estate for the Made in Angus - Sold to the world exporting event. The room was buzzing with #local stories, and with views like this outside, who wouldn't be inspired? There was also some really interesting points made that I feel apply whether you're looking to #export or not. 1) "Data is the new currency" - Fiona McLellan, So true especially when looking at global markets and market trends. Luckily there's lots of places where you can get easy to access market reports to help you plan ahead. Did I mention we can do that? 😉📊 2) "You're a small Scottish producer but you've got to think like a global supplier" - Kim Cameron of The Gin bothy. We're all guilty of not always being strategically minded when we really should be but Kim's story really showed what you can achieve when you are willing to plan ahead and see the long term aims. 3) "Networking is key" - Everyone attending. There's so many useful support organisations out there all of whom can add to the puzzle that is your business whether it's sector specific, exporting/importing or an area of your business. Connecting to the #network and building those relationship can make all the difference to your business. 🤝 These points also me the opportunity to shamelessly plug our next networking event next week!
