Your Ph.D. discipline or dissertation topic is NOT the only area you can land or build a fulfilling career in. "My degree is in ABC, what careers would you suggest for me?" My answer: don't limit yourself. I once thought no self-respecting scientist could build a career around making videos and writing content for lay audiences. Guess what I've been doing for the last three years? So don't limit yourself. Your specialized skills and knowledge can fit in spaces beyond your specific dissertation topic. Yes, this will involve some rethinking and re-cataloging of your skills. I have never suggested it is easy. But it is possible. 🩺 Assistant Professors: Fresh Blood in Research/Academia 💡 Many of my students have shared that they often receive rejection emails when applying for positions. 📩 When I looked into it, I found that they were mostly writing to full professors. My advice? Always reach out to Assistant Professors! They are the fresh blood in research and academia, eager to build their profiles, labs, and reputations. They are actively looking for motivated students to join their teams. 👩🔬👨🔬 💡 Tips for Approaching Assistant Professors: Do Your Homework: Research their work and mention how your interests align with theirs. 🔍 Personalize Your Email: Avoid generic messages. Tailor your email to show genuine interest. 📝 Be Clear and Concise: Mention your skills, experiences, and how you can contribute to their research. 🎯 Follow Up: If you don't hear back, a polite follow-up can keep you on their radar. ⏳ In conclusion, Assistant Professors are often the best people to approach when looking to secure a position in academia. This may be a bit simplistic but if you are starting grad school this fall and you're looking at a pages long reading list, it will be useful, I promise! Do not, I repeat, do not open a journal article and begin reading beginning to end, and on to the next. Have a system! First, keep a lit table of everything you read. I use End Note but I know there are loads of other options (I'm in too deep, don't try to convince me to change!). Grab the citation and the abstract of everything, no matter what - you don't know what you may need someday. Then: 1. Identify and highlight the research question. Find it first. Not in the abstract. In the paper, it should be specifically stated what the researchers are investigating and what they will answer. 2. Then, immediately move to the conclusion or the findings (different formats have different headers, do not let this throw you - look for the answers!). Did the researchers specifically and explicitily answer the stated research question(s)? 3. Next, go back to the methodology. How did the researchers come to their conclusions? 4. Does the methodology align with the findings? Is that a meaningful and reasonable way to determine what they set out to determine? Would you or could you have done it another way? 5. Finally, check the participants, the inclusion criteria, and recruitment. This is how you will determine if this study, and its findings, are generalizable. Is this something you could replicate in another context and expect to get the same or similar result? Now, put it down and move on to the next. What are your grad school tips?

During the month of October I was very excited to have two articles published of my research and work on green career education and guidance. I would like to thank Oliver Jenkins of the CDI and Tristram Hooley of NICEC for their support with the publishing process. The article in Career Matters (Issue 12.4) is 'Can green career education and guidance be more than just green washing', and the article in the NICEC journal (Issue 53) presents more of the research and academic background - 'Green career education and guidance through the perceptions and experiences of career practitioners in English Secondary schools'. I have attached the links to the articles if you would like to read! In both articles I have presented a nascent green career education and guidance framework. This is a synthesis of the existing academic literature and the empirical research findings of the thoughts and perceptions of front line career practitioners. I will be presenting a workshop at the National CDI conference on 26th November in Birmingham to introduce and explain the ideological. conceptual and practical utilities of the framework for career practitioners.
