Your Ph.D. discipline or dissertation topic is NOT the only area you can land or build a fulfilling career in. "My degree is in ABC, what careers would you suggest for me?" My answer: don't limit yourself. I once thought no self-respecting scientist could build a career around making videos and writing content for lay audiences. Guess what I've been doing for the last three years? So don't limit yourself. Your specialized skills and knowledge can fit in spaces beyond your specific dissertation topic. Yes, this will involve some rethinking and re-cataloging of your skills. I have never suggested it is easy. But it is possible. As I look back, I'm grateful that my dissertation didn't lead to meaningful results. Sure, it would have been nice to write a couple of articles on the role of advising for online community college students had there been some interesting finding, but then I'm not so sure I would have made the jump to data analytics at the institution instead.
Awesome advice Gertrude Nonterah, Ph.D.! Don't let your ego or "sunk-cost" related to your PhD get in the way of your ideal career move :)
Great post, Gertrude Nonterah, Ph.D. We are more than our degrees. We possess unique experiences, skill sets, and perspectives that can help others. A degree is only one part of our professional identity. Great advice!
BTW Beautiful picture. Where is it?
This is an excellent piece of advice! Thank you 😊
Most (if not all!) PhDs I know before transitioning outside of academia struggle with this. Tunnel vision and peer reinforcement are so strong that one tends to see only valid options on topics that we master completely often related to our immediate field of experience. I certainly did not see myself working in tech while doing a PhD in behavioral neuroscience. Yet here I am. What I found useful to fight this bias is to network and connect with people with jobs you would like to do: - ask them about how they get there - what skills they found useful - what struggles they faced PhD are ultra-resilient professionals. They earned it the hard way. They often just need a small push in the right direction. Thank you Gertrude Nonterah, Ph.D. for the important reminder!
I totally agree
Thanks for sharing, Gertrude Nonterah, Ph.D.! Take a look, Jessika Lisboa :)
