It’s been fascinating to see the response to Ben Affleck’s comments on the future of generative AI in Hollywood. While I deeply respect his perspective and the thoughtful way he communicated his ideas, I couldn’t help but wonder why so many people were so moved by his take. It seemed to resonate with Hollywood in a way AI conversations haven’t before, even though it didn’t feel like he was adding anything particularly novel to the conversation. This isn’t about invalidating those who found his insights compelling- I also appreciated his level of nuance. But it also felt like he was only telling half the story; his perspective wasn’t being contextualized, which paints a very different picture. Don’t get me wrong- I’m genuinely glad he’s stepping forward to bring these conversations into the mainstream. He has a remarkable ability to engage people on challenging topics in a way that resonates, and that’s an invaluable skill we’re fortunate to have on our side. But while we celebrate people like Ben Affleck, I think we need to remember to also recognize that disruption to his career *will* look very different from what disruption means for the vast majority of us in this industry. We don’t risk further divide by acknowledging these differences, quite the opposite I think. By simply acknowledging the underlying truth here, we can better guide the conversation to be more honest and truly address the needs of everyone. #BenAffleck #Creativity #AIinHollywood #GenerativeAI #FutureofStorytelling #CreativeInnovation

Check out Amanda Heidt's article on the role of generative AI tools in enhancing accessibility in science, and join us in advocating for more *honest and inclusive* conversations about this topic! Grateful for the opportunity to talk about this with Amanda and to now read about others' experiences.
Cannot tell you how thrilled I am to see this story make its way into the world. I remain highly skeptical about the intentions of every actor in the AI gold rush we're living through, but I do think that there is collective good that can be accomplished when we invite others to participate in honest and vulnerable conversations about their needs. More than most, this story could only be what it is because people were willing to have those conversations with me, for which I am extremely grateful. Interesting article. re GAI and accessibility GAI does produce a hell of a lot of rubbish and is often ablesit and is in no way Neuro-Affirmative. But that is the reason I find it helpful, I find it really hard to start something from a blank canvas. it's like blankness catapults me to inertia. Give me something that need an extreme about of fixing and a complete rework. and it like my mind is catapulted in turbocharge mode. And that is generally what GAI does for me, it gives me something that is completly wrong and often highly problematic, which is really useful for me to start. So while I might sometimes use it to start, my end result is never the answers it spits out. Even often the style GAI produces, never mind the content. that's not my style at all and I like my style of writing. For me, having the something wrong is way easier to begin with rather than having nothing at all. (when it comes to writing only) I wonder what that indicates about my cognition. I wonder is it sort of a defiance or drive for autonomy mechanism.

Where are we heading with AI? What does our future look like? Many of us conjure horrifying dystopian narratives. Watching "A Brief History of the Future" with Ari Wallach reminded me how the stories we tell can impact everything—from our beliefs to our perceptions of reality. While AI may lead us into a dystopian hellscape, we can also use these tools to tell stories about the futures we want to see, to create them in ways that weren't possible before. CREATIVE FRIENDS (which is all of you): check out the episode Once Upon a Time on PBS, and the whole series if you can. It'll get you fired up to make some things this weekend. #pbs #creativity #Bettertomorrows #futurism #genAI #AI

I recently watched Spike Jonze's 'Her' movie again, and it's amazing how much it predicted about the future of AI and how we interact with it. When the movie came out in 2013, the idea of an AI like Samantha, who could have deep, meaningful conversations, felt like pure science fiction. But with today's AI voice technology, we're getting pretty close to making that a reality. AI voices have come a long way. Now, they can understand context and even convey emotions, making our interactions with them feel more personal and real. This leap in technology really mirrors the vision of Her, where AI provides companionship and emotional support. But Her isn’t just about technology. It's a beautiful story about love, loneliness, and being human. Joaquin Phoenix is incredible as Theodore, a man who finds connection with Samantha, an AI voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Their relationship is touching and thought-provoking, making us think about love and the role of technology in our lives. Her is both a warning and an inspiration. It shows us how technology can improve our lives, but also reminds us to value real human connections. Spike Jonze's film is very relevant today, and if you have not watched it yet, I encourage you to do so. Not only because of the subject itself, but also because it is a very sweet, smart movie that has brilliant Phoenix in it. #AI #Technology #Innovation #HumanConnection #ArtificialIntelligence #FutureTech

When pondering the concept of a "bad person," have you ever considered three "good things" they did? It’s essential to reflect on the balance of our views. Our society tends to lean towards negativity in communication and perception, often setting high expectations for good and low expectations for bad. Let’s recalibrate our perspective by embracing the nuances of the good, bad, and ugly (a tipped scale) Today, there seems to be a lack of nuance, context, and empathy in the social fabric. Binary choices prevail, overshadowing the bigger picture. Whether it's stick versus carrot, left or right, or product A or B, the narrative often oversimplifies complex issues. Even on a personal level, individuals are categorized as nice or bad, selfish or selfless, neglecting the gray areas in between. Where has the nuance and context gone? Have we become complacent, resorting to broad strokes in our judgments? Interestingly, artificial intelligence exhibits more sophistication in such scenarios than humans. AI can provide insights on famous or infamous figures without bias or prejudice. It's a reminder that the dichotomy of devil versus angel may not always be as clear-cut as we assume. Remember, the devil was once an angel too. #AI #bias #socialfabric #society #mentalhealth #positivity #negativity
