📌 Parcel Delivery by Tram in Strasbourg 📦 Alstom is conducting an #experimental parcel delivery system using trams to ease traffic congestion in the city center of Strasbourg from September 16 to October 26, 2024 🏙️ 🛠️ 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - #Parcels will be delivered via Line B trams, from Hœnheim Gare to Broglie station. - Each morning, a #postman delivers about 100 parcels by tram, transferring them to a cargo bike for final delivery. - A second delivery route will be added in the early afternoon. 📝𝗢𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 - Assess the #coexistence of parcels and passengers without impacting comfort or tram operations. - Reduce urban congestion and pollution by utilizing alternative delivery methods. - Align with Strasbourg’s 2023 goals for sustainable, low-carbon urban logistics. Urban goods transport accounts for 20% of city traffic, consumes 50% diesel, and emits 25% of greenhouse gases. This initiative aims to improve urban logistics and traffic flow in cities. The #mobility ecosystem is "on the move" these days - with new forms of mobility and supporting technology & infrastructure emerging. Given what we are facing in Europe today, everyday, it is about time: - Right now - as I write this post - congestion & traffic jams of +390 km are plaguing millions in my home region North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany - not yet counting the many clogged arterial roads inside the cities - Our streets, bridges and railways are aging - in light of a massive investment gap in mobility infrastructure - There is spatial inequality - access to public, environmentally friendly forms of mobility is not a given in many areas - Inside our cities, competition for space is raging between modes (cars, public transport, micromobility, pedestrians, ...) Clearly, we need to further advance the way we move people & goods alike - with more accessible, more sustainable, and more efficient modes of transport and with adequate transport infrastructure in our cities and regions. With an evolving #mobility ecosystem come shifts and opportunities for the public and private sector. That's why I am excited about the launch of the Kearney Center for Advanced Mobility, which bundles our expertise in this field. We have come a long way since the formation of our Transportation Practice in the 1940s - one of the oldest industry practices in the firm. From public rail transit and bus services to on-demand vehicles and e-bikes, recent advancements in digital technology present a number of opportunities to make transportation more efficient, sustainable and accessible in Canada’s cities. But with these opportunities come challenges. Left alone, the implementation of digital technologies in transportation systems might inadvertently burden low-income households, immigrants and racialized Canadians. In this new IRPP Insight study, Ata Khan and Ren Thomas explain how all levels of government have a role to play in considering the needs of vulnerable users at every stage of decision-making, so that the benefits of the ‘new mobility era’ are felt by all.
