Jon Reed’s excellent weekly summaries of all things diginomica is a must read for me. I had to go over it a couple of times to find something that hit a chord but Jon’s questioning of both current and future productivity gains based on AI and my experience reveals to me some basic truths. Companies generally don’t do a good job of onboarding/training people who usually have to rely on co-workers and multiple failures/experience. Most job descriptions and procedures are meaningless- new people have to go through a high stress self-change management process. Only ONE company (of many) that I performed sales for had a formal training program including mock sales cycles PLUS a graded competition which amped up the stakes and resulted in clarity of job process and performance expectations over a fairly short 2 week period. I say all this to say that if a company can’t onboard people, how can they expect adoption of the change that AI can bring? Saying just do it or you’ll fall behind is irresponsible and reckless. So, employees should be asking their management, what is the organization’s AI strategy including data managment, job process change, security, privacy, IP, and performance expectation setting?
