I remember results day like it was just yesterday... While it most certainly wasn't yesterday (more like 10 years ago), I vividly remember the very real weight on my shoulders as I collected the results of my A-levels, having thrown everything at it after disappointing results at the end of year one. A harsh and often unspoken reality for many when navigating the jump from GCSE's to college level education. I was determined to just get through it as best I could, having defied every attempt by teachers to set me up on a path to university. The truth is, at this point in my life, I really couldn't imagine much worse than continuing with education. Instead, I juggled a waitressing job with a full-time contact centre role, in what was my first taste of the corporate world - and a full-time wage - ALL of which was spent shortly after, travelling Australia and SE Asia 🌏 As you'll see from the proudly donned cap and gown in my profile photo (I really must update this soon), I did end up at university eventually, on my own terms. My First Class Honours degree in Journalism with Media Studies is, to date, my greatest achievement - not just because of the title. Because I proved to myself I was capable of achieving whatever I set my mind to in a time that was right for me. I'm still really proud that I stuck with my gut and created my own path. I would encourage everyone to do the same. Sharing your education to employment story with someone at the beginning of their journey today could be really valuable - I encourage you to start the conversation 🗣️

IT’S GOING TO BE A TOUGH CROWD 😱 Put me on a panel, and I’m fine, put me in front of a group of teenagers or a lecturn, not so fine. I’m doing two presentations this week: 🗓️ Today, talking about #events to a group of 15-16 year olds as part of the BMJ work experience project. I decided to call my niece and ask her advice and this is what she said, “Cand, pretend you’re speaking to me, with my scatterhead brain. Just be yourself, be funny and hook them in with all your awesome stories about your career in events.” Thanks Ellie 🥰 Let’s see if I can do that, if all else fails, I’ll just talk about skydiving 😂 🗓️ The next big one is tomorrow at the AEME (Association for Events Management Education) Forum (Wed) and this one I’m nervous about, it’s an audience I’ve not presented to before so I just hope what I have to offer comes over in the right way and they find it useful. Why is any of this important? Because I am putting myself in a position I’m not all that comfortable with but that’s good, because nothing good happens in your comfort zone and if I have to do this to get the message across about #routesintoindustry Events Apprenticeships #professionalrecognition then that’s what I will do. But in all honesty, jumping out of a plan at 15,000ft is MUCH easier, I should know, I did it twice over the weekend (first time jumping at that height too 🪂) To that end, I will update you all on my progress 🫣🥴🤞 In the meantime, seeing the #FooFighters last week was yet another reminder of how cool our industry is…sweary video incoming (apologies) but just wanted to share the moment 👇
