A job seeker experiencing disability signing on to a new job doesn’t mean the support ends. Service providers can also work with employers to help map out a transition plan for the individual and help put a training plan in place. That planning can include the employer and future colleagues as needed. Some service providers also give continued support once that transition takes place, offering problem solving assistance to employers and regular contact with the new employee to help overcome any obstacles. Follow us this week to learn more about the six fundamental steps in the supported employment model for individuals experiencing disability. Friday: Career Development.

Are your team or customers missing out? That’s the question many employers could be asking if they fail to spot the potential of a great employee with disability. But not the team at Scone RSL, where Jake has become a firm favourite. Despite the challenges of limited employment opportunities, Jake’s positive attitude and ambition to achieve his goals never wavered as he searched for work. When Jake, who lives with a traumatic brain injury, reached out to APM Employment Services, his infectious smile and determination quickly made him popular. Kathryn, an APM employment consultant, helped tailor Jake’s Disability Employment Services program which included updating his resume and preparing for job interviews. Understanding Jake’s need for shorter shifts and frequent breaks, Kathryn explored opportunities that included a role at the Scone RSL. And it was Jake’s enthusiasm that impressed the club manager, who instantly recognised his potential. Find out how Jake’s new colleagues and regular customers have welcomed him at the club, and how the new job allowed Jake to gain more independence and financial freedom. https://lnkd.in/gFMMhZhZ #DisabilityInclusion #AcquiredBrainInjury #DisabilityEmployment #SuccessStory #GoodNews

Why do some employers, come across as already having made their minds up to not offer employment to those who disclose their disability? Having already had a number of interviews, which was only because I disclosed I had a disability, really felt (To me) they had no interest. Well I feel some of you are missing out on what individuals like myself have to offer: To name a few positives on what people like me can bring to the workplace is a strong focus on tasks, once locked in, complex tasks are just not a problem. Different perspectives to how the world looks and works can bring new ideas. High attention to details, which some may miss, leading to high quality output. We can be very creative towards problems, finding new ways to adapt and share. Not to mention, some have a real passion for particular subjects and can be a real asset, full of knowledge waiting to be shared. Personally I love routines and order. I'll take the process, see how it can be improved on. How can I make this faster, easier and better for others to use? Is this the best this process can be? It can be better. Once settled in a role, you'll find I'll be the most reliable person, on-time every time with strong ethical standards to follow. Granted, I can't speak for everyone and the scope and scale of how autism affects adults does and can vary. But just know we have a lot to offer. Was once told "I'd be very surprised if you get work" by a careers adviser at college. I then became IT Felid support Team Lead for a past role. So I hope you're surprised.

The most rewarding part of working with individuals with learning disabilities? It's the small victories that make a big impact. 🌟 Every day brings new challenges and opportunities. One of my most memorable experiences was helping a young man secure his first job. He was overjoyed, and his confidence soared. Witnessing his growth and knowing I played a part in it was incredibly fulfilling. Working in this field teaches patience, empathy, and resilience. It's not just about finding jobs; it's about changing lives. The gratitude and joy from the individuals and their families are truly priceless.
