It was a privilege to be invited to the UK House of Lords on Monday for the Climate Leaders Forum 2024, joining an inspiring group of Chief Sustainability Officers, innovators and climate thought leaders. Lord Adair Turner was brilliant, both realistic and optimistic, highlighting the progress made in the scale and adoption of new technologies and innovation in markets including Norway and Japan. Hannah Jones, CEO of The Earthshot Prize and John Elkington, founder of Volans (and one of my favourite authors), spoke of the journey we’ve been on together and where we need to focus now - and made us laugh as they “riffffffed” 😊 Key takeaways: ⚡️We need to collectively disrupt ourselves, redesign markets and take the long term view to scale solutions with speed. 💰Capital is key. We need blended finance solutions to plug the “valley of death” that faces sustainability solutions, even more acute for #femalefounders . 🌊We must not forget about #nature. Oceans absorb over 25% of our Co2 but are underinvested. 👩🏻💻Data is essential. Every CSO needs to be data friendly. 💪🏻We need to be bold, brave and do things differently, fast. One area of concern was the escalating energy demands of new technologies including #AI and power hungry #datacentres. So I was glad to share news of Fujitsu and Supermicro’s collaboration to develop green AI computing technology and liquid-cooled datacenter solutions. It was wonderful to reconnect with some of my favourite faces in sustainability and meet new and inspiring thought leaders including Darshana Myronidis, Adam Elman, Busola Lagoke, Arlo Brady, Musidora Jorgensen, Gerard McTigue, Joe Tilley, Baz Bignell, Cara Williams and Pru Ashby. Special thanks to Sammy Fry, David Over and Tech Nation for convening such an inspiring group and to Elizabeth Corse for her expert facilitation. Watch out for a report due to be published which includes our collective learnings on: Measuring and Reporting Impact, Navigating Energy Policy and GHG disclosure, Circular Economy, The Role of Nature and #Biodiversity, Innovating and Scaling Solutions, Carbon Markets, Navigating Stakeholder Pressure and The Responsibility of Technology on #NetZero.
Encouraging to see both passion and pragmatism coming together. The next few years are critical and we need to find a way of hacking the commercial protectionism that plays a crticial role in blocking real positive change. Markets need to be disrupted so the status quo changes. We need to see cycles of creative disruption supported by a new mindset on investment that foregrounds the opportunities of tomorrow over the exploitation of today.
Lovely to see you and Elizabeth Corse together! Elizabeth was my TechNation lead contact, and Sammy Fry our Net Zero cohort lead!
