This highlights the increasing reliance on innovation for sustainability efforts. Capgemini Research Institute's report "A world in balance 2024" is a really useful evaluation of the progress being made by corporates on sustainability, covering a range of important topics. I was struck by the section on sentiments around greenwashing. For example, "62% of executives are concerned that their organization’s efforts towards sustainability might appear insincere to the public." This is a worry if it deters Business Leaders from taking the necessary action and highlights the need for careful and honest communication around product sustainability claims and organisational progress on sustainability. Cambridge Consultants we have the extra challenge of trying to consider the sustainability impacts of innovations that are new-to-the-world and sometimes almost unimaginable. Taking a whole systems approach is really important so that we can have honest discussions about the trade offs (yes there are ALWAYS trades offs) to ensure that our innovations have the lowest possible impacts. The report has lots of recommendations on how to accelerate progress and is well worth a read.
