Interesting graph from the GB Electricity System Operator (ESO) from its annual balancing costs report in the context of the ongoing Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA). Grid build is expected to save ~£2bn/year in balancing costs in the early 2030s in its most ambitious scenario, 'Leading the Way', but incremental ESO initiatives could save £1-2bn/year from this year - totalling £18bn before 2030! 😲 Delivering on these near term benefits should be our collective focus as part of a Reformed National Market (RNM) programme kicked off in the Autumn.

51% of households argue over wifi speeds, only 42% are happy with their broadband speed and an outage come behind only boiler breakdown, water leak and power cut as the most feared utility crisis. Why faster, more reliable consumer broadband remains important to voters, and therefore politicians. There appears to be a gulf between the "lived experience" of consumers and the complacency of government/regulators with what is actually being delivered/received and/or available. Why is that so? The Voar report for the Just Transition Commission* is out today, in support of the Commission's own report on delivering a Just Transition for Shetland. We're grateful to the Commission for the opportunity - and to Future Economy Scotland and Miriam Brett for their support on this project. - If you've only got a minute, check out our graphics showing the scale and pace of upcoming developments (links below in comments). Shetland’s strong winds, prime development sites and capable workforce make the islands an attractive location for new energy projects. Locals - myself included - are however concerned that while further large-scale development seems guaranteed, a fair share for the community is not.   Despite hosting oil and gas terminals and the UK’s most productive onshore wind farm, Shetland suffers from high inequality and fuel poverty. More jobs and economic activity won’t fix this, because Shetland already has low unemployment and relies on fly-in workers. A fair energy transition means retaining a fair share of resource value. Our research has explored the opportunities and barriers to greater community ownership, participation and benefit from energy projects. Informed policy and greater certainty to unlock the UK’s renewables potential is what's needed, says RSK Renewables Director, Kit Hawkins in an opinion piece to help define the actions that should be taken to release the potential of the UK renewables sector following the general election. MISSING: 🇬🇧 Government's commission of a Spatial Strategic Energy Plan ('SSEP') An SSEP would coordinate the planning of large scale electricity network and generation assets in the UK. It was a key recommendation of Nick Winser CBE FREng, the Government's Electricity Network Commissioner, in his report on how we can deliver new infrastructure faster in order to deliver a net zero electricity system by 2035. In November 2023, the current Government committed to commissioning an SSEP from the future Electricity Systems Operator (National Grid ESO to be the National Energy Systems Operator). I gather the policy work has been done by Department for Energy Security and Net Zero with Ofgem and the ESO is poised to start work with established collaboration agreements with critical partners such as the Crown Estate in place. With a general election looming, I know I might have to wait a little longer. But an SSEP feels like a significant reform opportunity for the electricity sector in GB and it would be wonderful to see a new UK Government grabbing it with both hands by pressing the 'START' button on a Spatial Strategic Energy Plan for the UK as soon as they take office.

Last week we announced a MASSIVE £1BN INVESTMENT on Teesworks 💥 🔋 NatPower UK have announced plans to build Europe's largest battery storage facility right here in Teesside. Battery storage systems like this enable energy from renewables to be stored and then released when the power is needed most. Not only is an investment of this size another huge vote of confidence in our region, but it also goes to show that our plan to bring industries of the future to Teesside is WORKING ✅👊 Most importantly, investments like this mean more high-skilled, well-paid jobs, which is what local people need and deserve 💪

Renewables transition doesn’t end with replacing generation assets. Deploying infrastructure that facilitates this switch is equally vital. In a UK first Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners portfolio financed 5 Synchronous condensers in Wales and Scotland. The long-dated debt was arranged by NatWest, Siemens Financial Services and NORD/LB. All 5 assets are set to be fully operational by the end of this year and will help facilitate the admittance of intermittent renewables generation into the national grid.
