After months of dubious dealings, Yahya Afridi has been chosen as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan. His selection reflects the low expectations of those who picked him, questioning whether he will fall to the degraded standards set by Qazi Faez Isa. This situation could not have arisen without the controversial 26th Amendment, a result of manipulated electoral processes involving intelligence agencies.
The Pakistani public, who suffer from pollution and poor living conditions, had hoped for judicial independence. However, the 26th Amendment has crushed these hopes, subordinating the judiciary to the establishment. History shows that when people’s hopes are crushed, they rise up forcefully, as seen in the 1970 East Pakistan elections leading to its independence.
Comparing 1971 to 2022, the article highlights the army’s role in colonizing and brutalizing the population, eroding its respect. Today, Pakistan faces internal strife, particularly in Baluchistan and KP, due to historical grievances and mistreatment by the military. These regions are on the brink of civil conflict, exacerbated by past actions against the Taliban.
The article criticizes the current military leadership for its alliance with corrupt political figures, which has further discredited the army. As discontent grows, the people may rise against their own military, leading to widespread unrest.
Justice Yahya Afridi has a chance to defy expectations and restore the judiciary’s integrity. His decisions will determine his legacy and the future of Pakistan’s judicial system.
