This made my day, thanks to Armand Ruiz 😂 . There's truth in this picture but ... For AI practitioners focused on solving real business problems : AI today is less about deep knowledge of the underlying foundation models like transformers. It's also less about coding speed or typing, especially with all the excellent tools available—whether it's Hugging Face, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn, which have been around for much longer (10 or 15 years). The real value an AI practitioner brings lies in their ability to identify strategic AI projects for clients. And often, these aren't the projects everyone thinks of first. There's no shortcut here: it's about meeting with clients, listening carefully, and understanding their business and their strategy. Then, even though using OpenAI's LLM is easy enough through their API for a fast demonstrator or POC, things get hairy fast in the real world. When your client demands better performance, reproducibility, explainability, high availability, and secure data processing (such as keeping their data in the EU or their data center). This is where knowledge matters. Maybe data scientists choose to go back to fine tune a transformer (second column), or even to logistic regression or some other old school but reliable, energy-efficient, scalable algorithm (not shown in the table). The AI practitioner must be well versed in many algorithms and we do ask questions about that in our interviews. Yes, developers might rely on tools like GitHub Copilot to speed up coding. But it's not where the real complexity lies. Building long-lasting, trusted AI solutions requires careful planning, especially in areas like switching LLM providers, deploying a custom LLM cost-effectively, or setting up a monitoring system. This demands advanced dev skills, including architecture patterns like port-adapter design, and solid devops/cloud expertise.
