Whether you’re interviewing for a new job or negotiating a raise with your current employer, you need to understand your options when considering an offer package BEFORE you approach these conversations. You may have seen posts on social media calling out ridiculously wide ‘salary ranges’ posted with job descriptions since the laws in certain US states changed to require a job to include them. Although they are in the salary range category, they are likely referring to total compensation options. Many startups may offer more benefits or equity opportunities and lower base salaries whereas other companies may offer less ‘perks’ or no equity opportunities but higher salary. You need to understand these elements and CHOOSE WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU. Remember, an offer of stock or equity is NOT cash in your pocket, it is an investment opportunity dependent on the length of your employment at the company and your ability to purchase that investment when the time comes. Too many people don’t take time to understand this. There are benefits that you can negotiate in addition to your salary which we will review for you in future posts. Qualify and clarify what someone is referring to when they quote a ‘salary range’ or ‘total compensation value’ so you know exactly what you’re discussing. SALARY: Your salary or 'base salary' is what you are paid weekly, bi-monthly, or monthly, typically deposited directly into your bank (minus taxes). TOTAL COMPENSATION: The value of your complete offer package including and not limited to: healthcare benefits, bonuses, stock, equity, relocation, visa sponsorship, home office stipend, PTO, wellness, career and expat coaching, learning and development, short or long term leave options, sabbaticals, fertility or adoption assistance, caregiver assistance, life insurance, partner discounts, etc. *NOTE: An hourly paid job is not salaried, it might be presented as the ‘equivalent’ to X salary but if the offer is for hourly pay then you need to confirm overtime pay eligibility, expectation of hours per week you’ll work and whether they will pay taxes on your behalf of if you’ll be paid as an independent contractor who is responsible for their own taxes. Questions? Book a free session at alloracollective.com and we’re happy to help! Our coaching plans are personalized and we offer programs focused on your needs. I had a candidate once that accepted an offer that was $10,000 less than his current salary. Why, you might ask? Because for him, it wasn't all about the hard dollar figure. He knew there was more that goes into an offer than just a salary. He knew that by giving up some on the salary he would gain much more back in perks and other incentives. The benefits: Candidate figured they were worth about $3,000 more than his current benefits. The flexibility: He was able to work fully remote which he figured saved him around $2,000 a year in travel costs/maintenance. PTO: Candidate was given an extra week of PTO- Worth roughly $3,000 Commissions: This particular role offered commissions where is current role did not. Based off the prior year, he would be making an additional $10,000 with the new company. After crunching all of the numbers, this candidate found that he would be making at least $10,000 more than what he was. I think we can all agree that the more we get paid, the better. However, you don't want to jump over dollars to pick up pennies. Don't get so fixated on a specific amount that you overlook all of the other perks that seem to get forgotten about.

“Lynds, I’m too scared to negotiate. I’m just lucky to get a job offer” Here’s my response: An employee who negotiated a starting yearly salary of $55,000 rather than $50,000 would earn an additional $600,000 or more over a 40 year career. I can say from personal experience as well as coaching clients that by failing to negotiate, you will be leaving money on the table over the course of your career and have to claw your way to get more money in the future. If you can’t negotiate salary, then negotiate: tuition reimbursement, parking stipend, start date, PTO, relocation package, sign on bonus, or work from home. #career #interview #negotiating #negotiation #salary #salarynegotiation

Strongly held belief: You should always negotiate for a higher salary and more time off. (Unless you want to lose $100's of thousands of dollars over your career) Salary compounds and lower pay can follow you throughout your career history. Luckily, it isn't hard to learn how to negotiate. And the best part? You can negotiate for more than just base salary such as: - Equity - Job title - Paid time off - Sign-on bonus - Performance bonus - Relocation assistance - Commission structure Remember: Negotiation should be viewed as mutually beneficial. It should benefit both you and the company. Be realistic and respectful. And most importantly, don't let fear stop you from negotiating for what you deserve. It's rare to have an offer rescinded when trying to negotiate and if they did, it's clear that they wouldn't value you later if you signed on. I hope this helps friends. --- Repost ♻️ this if you've tried these tactics and they've worked. Go ahead and negotiate friend…recruiters are expecting you to. But keep in mind, especially right now as budgets are getting tight, that salary isn’t the ONLY thing you can negotiate. You can negotiate: * Job title * Vacation Days * Work Days * Bonuses * 401k Match * Continuing Education * Certification Costs * Professional Memberships Don’t be afraid to negotiate. I know some people are afraid that their offer might get rescinded if they negotiate. I’ll be honest, if that happens it’s a good indication this wasn’t the place you wanted to work.
