There has been a major update on the future of London’s Smithfield and Billingsgate markets. The recent announcement halting the proposed relocation of #Smithfield and #Billingsgate markets to Dagenham marks a major shift for those connected to London’s wholesale trade. The City of London Corporation has paused plans, citing a need to reassess the financial sustainability of the project. Notably, this decision does not impact the Museum of London’s scheduled move to the Smithfield site, which will proceed as planned. For those of us working with markets regularly, it’s interesting to note that The City of London’s plans encountered early challenges from Havering Council, which objected based on Romford’s historic market charter rights. This underscores the enduring relevance of charter rights and managing those rights. Port is for Christmas, or is it? I always remember one summer at Majestic where the Muswell Hill branch welcomed a new member to the team. He had just returned from working at Taylor's Port House, where serving port in the height of summer was the norm. Guess what? He absolutely smashed sales for the store that summer breaking company records. I questioned him whilst he visited our store on a stock run. How did you manage it? Here's what he did: Had the confidence to challenge conventional thinking. Changing customer perceptions is no easy feat, but he embraced the challenge. Leveraged his unique experience and knowledge. By sharing his expertise and enthusiasm for port, he made it accessible and exciting for the customers. Created a unique customer experience. He offered tastings and shared the perfect summer pairings, transforming port from a winter drink into a summer sensation. Lesson learned: Innovation often starts with challenging the status quo. How exciting! Evolving on many levels

If you know New York City, you know there’s one thing about it that always stays the same - it is constantly changing. Old buildings come down and new ones climb out of holes in the ground. Waves of people come and go, even the ways we get around expand and contract. But through all this transformation, Mister Softee’s jingle somehow permanently marks the start of summer and a Nathan’s hot dog in Coney Island is only ever a subway ride away. Superbien hasn’t just called New York home for 5 years, we called Tom Scalabre captain of our ship till summer 2023. And since then, just like this miraculous place, Superbien New York has sailed into a new era of its own - informed by the past but reimagined for the future.
