I haven’t spoken about failure acceptance in some time. In many instances failure acceptance and failing forward fall into the same categories. This is an amazing story that deserves far more than a few paragraphs....    Caitlin Clark’s amazing tenure with the Iowa Hawkeyes, marked by achievements and records, also unfolds and narrative of accepting failure with grace. Despite amassing nearly every conceivable individual honor and award and redefining NCAA women’s basketball, the peak of Clark's collegiates goal, the National Championship, remained beyond her reach. This duality of extraordinary success against the backdrop of unattained team glory encapsulates a lesson in the acceptance of failure. Clark’s journey underscores a vital, often overlooked aspect of sportsmanship: the ability to embrace setbacks not as definitive defeats but as integral components of one's growth and character. Almost time again for the LMU Mens soccer fall season...which, for me, means time to reflect and prepare for all things Team Culture and Individual Player Development. As I reflect on last year with the LMU group there were a lot of positives. The hard numbers show that we finished in the Elite 8 in the Men's NCAA Tournament, had 3 players sign professional contracts (including 1 taken in the 1st round of the MLS draft), had 4 MLS super draft eligible players, a WCC all academic 1st team selection, 2 all west region selections and multiple players selected to the NCAA National Teams of the week. We did a lot of things right on our way to those accomplishments. As a staff we created a purposefully driven culture based on our Lion DNA, our Process, Key Values (and heuristics to drive those values daily)...and we endeavored everyday to ensure a championship mentality. Equally important was that we created a safe environment for players where they grew as people and student athletes. And of course the players were simply outstanding in their approach, preparation and Big-Time Performance Mentalities. A big role for me was/is to create a place where every athlete has a chance to be successful. This is college soccer, so in my mind I have a responsibility to ensure growth, and opportunities to grow, as people as well as performers. This is of course very difficult in a team with 30 or so spots, with 11 starters and limited roster spots on game day - so "success" has to be talked about, defined and process, as well as product, oriented. I have proactive ways, as well as reactive ways, that I help players drive at their success. While we were largely successful in this area there is always room for improvement and we will look to make those adjustments and improvements this year. Once we get going I plan to share a bit of my proactive and reactive processes here in a series of articles throughout the semester. And of course, as always, if anyone has any questions I am happy to share my approach. I can say I had a number of conversations with college, pro and youth coaches last year about my approach and am happy to continue to have those chats as we all seek to help our athletes be the best versions of themselves and drive towards championships.

Let's talk about rosters. You may think it is nuance or semantics, but I see a roster limit and a roster cap very differently. Under current NCAA rules, each varsity sport already exists in a world where there is a roster limit. Virtually all programs have more players than they can activate on any given gameday, which is a vital part of roster management and the entire ecosystem of college sports. Take baseball as an example; teams are allowed to have 40 players as part of the overall program, but only 25 can be active for games. Many of the inactive players still play a vital role on the team and are often redshirting or using their opportunity as a walk-on to further their career opportunities. Under the terms of the proposed House settlement, however wobbly its legs may be, college baseball teams would only be allowed a total of 34 student athletes to be on their roster. This is a reduction of at least 6 players per team, and with over 300 teams competing at the Division 1 level, a lot of kids lose their opportunity to play at this level and thus lose out on the proposed revenue share. Another unspoken issue for some college baseball players is the loss of draft leverage if rosters are capped. As mentioned above, many of the inactive players will take a redshirt year. Those guys get in tons of classroom hours and weight room hours. They focus and hone their craft. When they get out there the next season, many are "breakout" stars because of the invisible days they put in over their down year. Depending on their age, they could get two (or more) cracks at the MLB draft with another significant year of college baseball as their leverage. Losing six roster spots to the proposed settlement means less opportunities for stories like this. There are ways for players to increase their value to a team and younger student athletes should begin to consider this. It was a small gesture monetarily in the grand scheme of things... ...maybe $300 each for maybe 50 people at max but it was priceless... ...in reinforcing how Coach Mufet McGraw created a team culture. Everyone had a role and everyone needed to do their role to the best of their abilities for us to achieve our team goals. In 2001, I was on the staff of the Notre Dame Women's Basketball team that won the national championship. My newly created role was responsible for increasing attendance and fan engagement for women's basketball. It was an amazing opportunity that I took personally. We built a movement for women's basketball at the University of Notre Dame. Attendance reached Top 6 in the nation and the fans continue to strongly support the team today with top ranking attendance. Growing the Notre Dame fan base is something I'm incredibly proud of still. So much so, that we're season ticket holders travelling from the Chicago area to attend! I didn't score a point for the IRISH. Neither did all the other team support such as coaches, athletic trainers, male practice players, student managers, sports information directors, etc. but we all received a National Championship ring. (see pics in carousel below) It takes a collective effort to win a National Championship. The power of a true team will always beat a couple strong individuals. I have never felt this more than with this 2001 team. As we move throughout our careers, let us never forget the power of teams. 𝐖𝐄 > 𝐌𝐄. It's easy to forget all the work, little and big decisions along the way, and all the contributors over the years that lead to big wins. I'm thankful for my years at Notre Dame learning from some of the best.
