Starting the week reflecting on the undeniable power of networks and the critical role a culture of support plays in shaping an individual’s career. Lately, I’ve been in conversations discussing the stark difference between environments that empower your career growth and those where your contributions go unnoticed. In reflecting on my own career journey as well as the experiences of friends and colleagues, I’ve come to realize how profoundly this difference can influence your trajectory. For organizations and teams that pride themselves on diversity, the real measure of success isn’t just in the numbers, but in who is truly thriving. Representation without recognition is a hollow achievement, leading to a culture of stagnation vs innovation. Recurrent themes: Leadership support - Women who get recognition have the support of leaders, managers or mentors who champion their efforts and advocate for their advancement- even when they’re not in the room. This support helps ensure their contributions are acknowledged - Women who lack recognition may lack access to influential mentors or sponsors within the organization, feeling unsupported and unseen. Confidence vs feeling ‘less than’ - Women who get recognition build confidence in their abilities and are likely to gain opportunities to raise their profile and exposure to select groups or networks. - A lack of encouragement leads to ‘imposter syndrome’, feeling uncomfortable voicing opinions or changing themselves to ‘fit in’ to the culture. It can lead to an individual’s contributions diminished with less exposure to development opportunities and overcoming the ‘glass ceiling’. This can lead to ongoing stress and frustration, burnout and even leaving an organisation Cultural bias - Women who get recognition may be in environments that consciously address and counteract gender or ethnicity biases, allowing their achievements to be more fairly evaluated. - Women who don’t get recognition may be in workplaces where unconscious biases or stereotypes lead to their leadership or work being less visible or credited to others Strategic opportunities and balance: - Those who get recognition align themselves with high-impact, strategic projects that are visible to leadership and have measurable outcomes. They may also have access to ‘stretch’ projects or exposure to opportunities to develop. - ‘Success’ may be perceived as the ability to balance work and personal life in a way that aligns with workplace expectations, with little consideration of the type of work, job satisfaction or the ability of an individual to have development pathways It’s not enough to celebrate diversity in numbers alone; we have the ability to recognize the brilliant women making significant impact and ensure their contributions are visible, valued and celebrated. If you know a fantastic woman you work with, start here👇🏻👇🏽👇🏾 Northern Power Women Awards nominations close this Friday 27th September.
Where does the time go?! 😧 It is recorded that 91% of people are more likely to thrive after being recognised for their achievements. It's truly heartening to see initiatives like the Women in Engineering Panel Event at BCIT, where women like Francesca Cusati can share their experiences and inspire the next generation of engineers. Events like these play a crucial role in breaking down barriers and encouraging young women to pursue careers in STEM fields. Aplin Martin's commitment to diversity and equity is commendable. By actively striving for gender balance in the workplace and implementing inclusive recruitment protocols, they're not just talking about diversity - they're actively fostering it. It's through actions like these that real change is made, and it's inspiring to see companies like Aplin Martin leading the way. Here's to more organizations following suit and creating environments where everyone, regardless of gender, can thrive.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we have the privilege of spotlighting the contributions of a few of the remarkable women at O’Hara’s Son Roofing (OSR). In this short interview, we have the honor of speaking with LisaMarie M., a branch manager at OSR. Lisa exemplifies the resilience, expertise, and innovation that women bring to the forefront of a traditionally male-dominated industry. Lisa Martin Service Branch Manager OSR NJ Branch: Serving the North-East Region 1. What led you to a career in roofing? Expanding into an existing family business by utilizing women’s business incentive programs significantly fostered my successful career in the roofing industry as a woman. The roofing field’s allure, technical knowledge, problem-solving, and the opportunity to contribute to large-scale projects, drew me in and sparked my passion for this industry. 2. What have been your barriers and how did you overcome them? Throughout my career in a male-dominated field, I faced barriers such as gender biases, limited networking opportunities, and the need for consistent self-validation. To overcome these challenges, I sought mentorship and support networks, attended industry events to learn from others, and focused on proving my expertise through quality work and building relationships. My resilience, determination, and continuous self-improvement allowed me to gradually gain trust, respect, and success. 3. What woman in history inspires you most and why? Emily Warren Roebling is an inspirational figure for women in male-dominated roles. Despite societal expectations, she oversaw the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge when her husband fell ill. Facing discrimination, she took on the challenge, demonstrating intelligence, determination, and problem-solving skills. Her achievements break barriers, showcase women’s capabilities, and inspire future generations to pursue their passions. Emily’s legacy embodies the power of perseverance and serves as a reminder of the significant contributions women can make in any field, irrespective of societal expectations. Check back next week for the last of the four interviews! #commercialroofing #nwir #nawic #womenshistorymonth #OSR #inspiration
