California love. Kelliann Amico, APR, Fellow PRSA and Michael Mannheimer had a blast last week at the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) ICON conference in Anaheim! They learned about advances in AI, how to lead with empathy, and tips for navigating a future of unprecedented change. This post is US-centric but there's no reason the principles can't be applied worldwide... "Since 2017, The Pop Culture Collaborative’s community (including staff, Managing Partners, grantees, Senior Fellows, and cohort members) has commissioned research; convened grantees for learning retreats, work sessions, and community gatherings; and conducted dozens of interviews with field practitioners. With this work we have investigated the question of how narratives and stories could become catalysts for widespread cultural change. Our most important revelations: 1. THE GOAL IS TO TRANSFORM NARRATIVE OCEANS. 2. THE WORK IS TO ACHIEVE NARRATIVE IMMERSION. 3. TO ACHIEVE NARRATIVE IMMERSION, FUND NARRATIVE NETWORKS. 4. NARRATIVE SYSTEMS ACCELERATE THE PACE OF CHANGE." 🔍 We all have biases, and that’s okay. But when we only listen to “people like us,” we risk creating echo chambers that drown out different perspectives. This article explores how this tendency limits our understanding and stifles innovation. By surrounding ourselves with similar views, we miss out on valuable insights from diverse backgrounds. It’s time to challenge our assumptions and actively seek out differing opinions. Only then can we foster real growth and understanding 🌍💡

While challenges persist, the enduring value of polling lies in its ability to bridge the gap between individuals and the collective, transforming disparate voices into a coherent understanding of the public will. So let's not dismiss polls as mere noise; let's embrace them as a vital instrument for navigating the complexities of our ever-evolving world. Even in this era of information overload and skepticism, polls remain a vital tool for understanding the complex tapestry of public opinion. They offer a window into the hearts and minds of the people, illuminating the issues that matter most and providing a crucial foundation for informed decision-making.

A great quote by Jerome Bruner on how narratives are everywhere around us. This potential of shaping human experience and, vice-versa, how humans shape the narratives they engage with is a critical topic to be discussed if we aim to take systems change seriously. 👉 Don't forget to join us next week, on May 20th, to discuss this topic: https://lnkd.in/eYXQ6pWw

Together, we’re exploring critical issues like the impact of a climate-constrained world on asset management, strategies for nature-positive market development, and navigating the global transformation of private equity. It’s challenging, inspiring, and exactly where we need to be to help shape the future of these industries.

I second this call for plain language. Speaking plainly helps us communicate our message and connect with more people so they understand the importance of our work!
To expand the conversations on structural racism and health, we need to lead with values and we need to keep it simple. Using jargon or fuzzy language doesn’t bring people closer together to solve issues of equity. We need to use plain language. As M. Allyn Brooks-LaSure shared at BMe’s Next Narrative Summit last month, communications professionals should always strive to be clear, cohesive, and consequential. Tell us how you've used plain language in your work. What has helped you and your organization communicate more directly and clearly?
