This week, our Head of Innovation, Lewis E. Shuler II, participated in a panel discussion, focused on how to make circular systems succeed, at the Future Fabrics Expo in London. During the panel it was highlighted that Paradise Textiles - Alpine Group's material science and innovation hub - is a great example of a manufacturer that’s leading the change and working to lessen or ease the burden of implementation. It was also noted that, as an industry, we often assume that manufacturers as a stakeholder will just do what is needed for a brand, but clearly that has not always worked and it’s important for supply chain actors like Paradise, to be part of the conversation and part of the scaling journey. Lewis E. Shuler II shared examples of how Paradise Textiles is doing its part to be a pioneer in helping to create the collective change the industry needs: Bridging development into commercialization 1.    Innovators and fiber companies have focused on their technology, and we are working diligently to move these fibers into running fabrics and secure agreements with brands to switch to these preferred fibers. 2.    Incremental change is key. We are mindful that adopting sustainable products and practices is a journey, and that with each incremental change, we can help lessen impacts, whilst avoiding disrupting our brand partners’ operations or alienating their customers. 3.    As a manufacturer, we also have recycled fiber targets, so it’s important we are focused on the most progressive brands in this space, as it’s a reflection of our work too. 4.    Sudden, radical cost increases can be expensive and risky, which is why creative costing models across the entire value chain - to share the burden of higher costs - are important. 5.    Our point of view is lead the charge now, before regulations come into play; it’s a scramble for teams at brands to prepare for the regulations, which is why we are doing our part to ensure the supply chain side is set up for success. Textile recycling at our garment factories 1.    As we advocate for mono materials it becomes easier to manage off cuts at the garment factory. 2.    We work with a really high volume of materials that fit this bucket. 3.    Looking forward, we see big opportunities to manage post-industrial textile waste on site and turn it into new yarns, whilst complex blends will rely on our advanced recycling partners. Il Gufo and RE3 | A partnership in the name of circularity March 2024_ Il Gufo enters a collaboration with RE3, a benefit corporation that has implemented the patented model of circular economy re-use, re-generate, re-sell (RE3), designed to reduce the environmental impact of used garments and industrial textile waste. Thanks to the partnership between the two entities, the end customer will be able to visit the Il Gufo mono-brand boutiques in Milan, Rome, and Paris and deliver the used garments they intend to give a second life to. The collected garments will be analyzed by a social cooperative assigned to sorting operations: after evaluating their condition, the garment will be resold, reused, or regenerated, that is, transformed into secondary raw material. Through a unique QR code, the reuse mode will be shared, and it will be possible to track the path of each garment in real-time and with total transparency. Upon delivery to the boutique, the customer will also receive a discount to use on the new collection. This partnership further confirms Il Gufo's commitment to redefine the standards of the competitive arena, promoting sustainability practices, and fostering responsible consumption models.

Navigating the Future of Sustainable Textiles with EU ESPR Regulation As we embrace the evolving landscape of the textile industry, it's crucial to align with the sustainability goals set by the upcoming EU ESPR regulation. One key requirement is producer responsibility, ensuring producers are accountable for the post-consumer stage of textiles. This incentivizes the design of products that are easier to reuse, repair, and recycle. I've had the privilege of collaborating with brands for many years, creating products that meet the criteria of a circular economy. Designing for circularity is more than just using preferred materials; it's about crafting products that can be seamlessly recycled. Through my work, I've educated others on how textile fiber selection can enable circularity and meet ESPR criteria, while also supporting regulation development from the manufacturer’s perspective. One standout example is the jacket I'm wearing today, made within the EU New Cotton Project and designed by H&M. This jacket embodies circularity, featuring 49% Infinna and 51% cotton, and showcases the expertise of all project consortium members. By choosing Infinna, brands are not just meeting regulatory requirements—they are committing to a sustainable future where recycled, recyclable, and reusable materials are the norm. Infinna is 100% recycled, making it possible to meet recycled content requirements when blended with other fibers, and it also excels on its own. Researchers from Aarhus University in #Denmark have made a significant breakthrough in #textile #recycling #technology. This innovative method focuses on efficiently separating #elastane from #nylon in used clothing, a process that has long been a challenge in the recycling industry. Until now, a major hurdle in textile recycling has been the difficulty of separating blended fibers, which are commonly found in a vast array of garments. The new Danish technology not only overcomes this barrier but also paves the way for more sustainable practices in dealing with post-consumer clothing waste. Thank you VORN — The Berlin Fashion Hub for the invite to World Circular Textiles Day's inspiring #WCTD2024 panels last night. There are clearly great things cooking in the transition towards CE in the textile industry. However, the questions and discussions revealed more than a longing for connection in this endeavor. We need the wisdom of all, to push circularity in an industry, with nearly 100% SMEs in Europe, that simply do not have the resources to put a whole team in charge of ESG and circular transformation strategy. To succeed in transforming processes, complying with new and upcoming regulations under the CEAP, and staying viable over the next years, we must stop gate-keeping suppliers and industry partners. Those new, and innovative ventures in fiber-to-fiber recycling and regenerative textile development need more than one client to grow or even remain in business, as we learned the hard way when Renewcell had to file for bankruptcy earlier this year. I loved how panelists and guests were willing to share knowledge and information on f-2-f recycling, sourcing of recycled material, technologies, cooperations, and innovations. The info and partners we need seem to be all out there, just somewhat invisible and sometimes hard to filter through these noisy times. Let's destigmatize asking questions. Let's join threads.
