You’ve probably seen it in the headlines or your social media feeds. The UN released its assessment of the world’s climate progress. And it’s not a pretty picture. For the world to meet its climate goals countries have to slash their yearly greenhouse gas emissions 42% by 2030. Current climate plans would only reduce emissions by 4-10%. That leaves a big gap between where we are and where we need to be. Juan Pablo Hoffmaister has been tracking this issue ahead of COP29. And he’s put together some great resources on how countries can help make up for the shortfall with their new 2025 climate goals: https://lnkd.in/ew9pkhFj And what should be included in plans to implement these new goals: https://lnkd.in/eZvfpwvr

🌍 The latest UN Environment Programme Emissions Gap Report reveals a concerning reality: current climate pledges would only reduce emissions by 4-10% by 2030, far below the 42% reduction needed for 1.5°C pathway. However, the upcoming 2025 NDC revision cycle offers a crucial opportunity to bridge this gap. Some thoughts on three key strategic priorities emerging in this short piece, Closing emissions gap with 2025 NDC Revisions: Critical Opportunities for Climate Action. The tools exist - now we need unprecedented political will to deploy them. Read more to discover how countries can develop NDCs that both raise ambition and create practical implementation pathways. #ClimateAction #Sustainability #ParisAgreement #ClimatePolicy #EmissionsGap #ClimateFinance

Compared with what? When people say climate goals are too hard or cost too much, this is the only question in response - so says Todd Stern in this great article. He's clearly been reading lots of Climate Outreach work when he says: "The task of building broad, engaged, committed support for climate action is essential. Only that can establish a powerful new norm regarding the need for net-zero emissions. Governments, businesses, and civil societies can do what must be done. And when anyone says the goals are too hard, too difficult, cost too much, require too much effort or too much change, ask them: Compared with what?" https://lnkd.in/ehRjQDRx

📢 The OECD’s 2024 Climate Action Monitor is out! 🌎 It is structured in three main sections: 1. How far are countries from achieving national and global mitigation objectives? 2. How are climate-related hazards and disasters affecting the world? 3. How far did countries’ climate action progress? Some key messages include: 👉 Current net-zero targets are not ambitious enough. By August 2024, 110 Parties, covering 88% of global GHG emissions, have pledged net-zero targets. However, even if all these net-zero targets are met, total emissions are estimated to reach 21 Gt CO2e in 2050. This will exceed considerably the 8 Gt CO2e level estimated to be necessary to limit global warming to 1.5°C. 👉 There is progress but more ambition and efforts are needed to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Although countries have increased their emission reduction targets, current commitments by OECD and partner countries imply reductions of 14% in their emissions, well behind the 43% emission reduction by 2030 required to comply with the Paris Agreement goals estimated by the IPCC. 👉 Climate policy action is misaligned with sectoral emissions profiles. Descriptive analysis from the CAPMF suggests that climate policy action may not be well-aligned across emission source sectors. The latest UN NDC Synthesis Report sheds light on the challenges and advancements in global climate action. By 2030, current national climate plans are estimated to reduce emissions by only 5.9% from 2019 levels, falling short of necessary reductions. However, there are also important trends to build on. Countries are increasingly embracing comprehensive climate strategies, focusing on methane reduction, nature-based solutions, and agricultural transformation. Encouraging trends include enhanced institutional frameworks, robust domestic climate coordination arrangements, and a rise in ocean protection measures integration. Despite some implementation gaps, these trends indicate a maturing climate action landscape with opportunities for accelerated progress. #ClimateAction #ParisAgreement #NDCs Read more: https://lnkd.in/eetbkABQ

1moIs there anyway way I can get help for my reforestation project in my village in Kumiane in Pangia district of Southern Highlands province in Papua New Guinea? I have been planting native trees since 2022 using my own funds targetting 50,000 trees. I have been employing local indigenous communities to plant a 100ha customary lands. I have a GoFundMe campaign organised by an American friend of mine to support my effort in this climate change mitigation program. I need help. Thanks.
