✨ It’s here! #BritainTalksClimate 2024 has landed! ✨ The Britain Talks Climate toolkit helps us tell climate stories that resonate with people of different values and backgrounds. Our 2024 research with More in Common explores what the British public thinks and feels about #ClimateChange and #ClimatePolicy, and is designed to help anyone engaging the British public with climate. Here are some key takeaways: 🏛 Appetite for leadership on climate and nature is strong and enduring. 🏃♀️ There is broad agreement that it is not too late to act. 👥 A majority want to press ahead with net zero. ⌚ Most believe climate change should sit above short-term politics. 😊 A majority think that reaching net zero will be good for our country. 💰 Significant government spending on climate change is popular. About us
At Climate Outreach, we help people and organisations tell a different climate story; from one of a lost cause to a story of people, progress and potential. With 20 years of research and insight, we know how to make climate stories as powerful and impactful as possible. We work with environmental groups, government and communities, helping them to understand their audiences and communicate powerfully with them. Armed with our insights, organisations and leaders can effectively engage and involve people at scale. An early Christmas present for everyone who cares about engaging and involving people in tacking climate change... the UK government has announced it will publish a Public Participation Strategy in 2025 as part of its net zero plans! The strategy will include: - how people will be supported to adopt new technologies - opportunities for public views to be considered in policy design - involving local communities and more vulnerable groups - ensuring the voice of disabled people is properly heard We can't wait to work with the government and others to help design a public engagement plan that's ambitious and inclusive, and allows everyone to play their part in the UK's climate story. We know climate minister Kerry McCarthy - Labour MP for Bristol East is committed to using effective public engagement in policy development and delivery. We're looking forward to working together to help flesh out government plans in the new year, and ensure the public participation schemes put in place are set up for long-term success. Business, journalists, scientists and politicians need to get better at communicating climate solutions, not just the many climate problems we face. They - and the media - also need to talk about what people from all walks of life are already doing to fight for a just and sustainable future, explain our colleagues Jasmin Souesi and Tara Bryer. We're pleased to see government understands the importance of involving people in decisions about planning and energy. The Clean Power 2030 Action Plan announced on Friday promises to seek feedback from communities, civil society and wider stakeholders on how to restore nature as part of the renewable energy rollout. There's a recognition too that people need to see what clean energy looks like for their households and neighbourhoods in order to grow public trust, knowledge, and confidence in low-carbon technologies. We're looking forward to seeing the government's more detailed proposals early in the new year, for how it will engage people in inspiring ways.

We're still digesting the new planning framework for England that's just come into force, but so far we're really pleased to see it retains the importance of engaging communities meaningfully - and early - in planning proposals. Our response to the NPPF consultation earlier this year stressed how important this is. We know that the more involved and informed people feel in what's happening where they live, the more people will feel that plans are fair. Development should be done with - not to - local people. We also want to see a wider government public engagement strategy that brings people into the conversation about everything that's happening on climate change. We are working hard to make this happen. For the NPPF see: https://lnkd.in/d6XzEX6

Great read from the team at Climate Outreach on the need to invest in people-centred stories that audiences find much more relevant and relatable to their own lives. We recently had a conversation with Rachael Orr and Noora Firaq 🇬🇧 🇲🇻 (also at Climate Outreach) about this - link in the comments below if you'd like to tune in.
