I attended the Indian Healthy Snacking Summit on the 6th of July, and it was awesome to see how snacking is changing in our country! I got some great insights and met people who are driving real change. Here are some key takeaways that were food for thought: 📌 Evening Snacks with Tea or Coffee - 71% of people love to snack in the evening, usually with a cup of tea or coffee. This timeless chai ritual continues to be a staple of our snacking habits. 📌 Shift to Mindful Eating - 9 out of 10 people want to switch to healthier snacks. There's a big shift towards mindful eating. 📌 Cost is a barrier - 58% said that high costs stop them from buying healthier snacks. This indicates a need for more affordable, healthy snacks. 📌 Flavor First - 73% choose snacks based on taste. Flavor is still king. 📌 Low Sugar, High Protein That’s what is working when developing products for the sweeter tooth! Lovely meeting Kumar Ujjwal & Arjun Vaidya. Recently, a snack company raised 650cr in IPO, which oversubscribed 9x. This made me wonder how big the snack market is in India. Snacking is our favourite pastime activity, with over 80% of us indulging in it at least twice a day. You may be surprised to know that India is the world's third-largest snack market, estimated at nearly ₹45,000 crores and projected to grow at an impressive 11% CAGR over the next decade. The snack market is divided into two categories - Western and Indian snacks. Our all-time favourite Western snacks(60%), like potato chips, nachos, cheese balls, and puffs, are popular for their salty and crunchy taste. Ethnic snacks(40%) include savoury namkeen mixes, deep-fried bhujia lentil snacks, chickpea flour gathiya fritters, and peanut chikki brittle. The industry is dominated by global giants like Pepsico (Lays, Doritos, Kurkure & Cheetos) for Western snacks and Halidirams, Bikaji, and other regional players like Balaji wafers and Gopal snacks for ethnic snacks. What does the snack industry's future look like? Trends suggest catering to diverse regional tastes and introducing healthier options like millet snacks, baked or air-fried products, and makhana pasta, which are increasingly gaining popularity. This would reduce the dependence on the ₹5 category and expand product lines to improve profit margins. I hope this story will come to mind next time you indulge in your favourite snack.
