It’s World Sustainable Transport Day. What does that mean? Sustainable transport refers to mobility systems that minimise environmental impact, promote social inclusivity, and support economic resilience. It prioritises reducing carbon emissions, enhancing resource efficiency, and ensuring safe, affordable, and accessible transport options for all, while fostering community connectivity and collaboration across sectors. More literally, sustainable transport could include active transport (walking & cycling), public transport, electric transport, green transport and more abstractly includes accessible and affordable transport. Aligning investment portfolios with sustainable transport can lead to: • stable, long-term returns due to growing demand and supportive policies. • reduced exposure to risks associated with fossil fuel dependency and regulatory changes. • enhanced public health, reduce emissions, and promote social equity. The transportation sector is the third largest contributor to global GHG emissions, and the only sector where emissions are still increasing even in developed countries, making it vital in our climate crisis battle. As someone who focussed on sustainable transport for their psychological honours thesis, today (World Sustainable Transport Day) is very important to me. I'm now working in the finance industry, an industry that has a huge capacity to make waves of environmental and social impact in areas like transport through investment and awareness, so I want to share some of these resources (for the finance peeps + anyone else interested in the sustainable transport movement). Of course, most of my connections are not in the finance sector but still have an unbelievable capacity to advocate for and use sustainable transport. So today/this week/in the near future, *if you have access and can afford to* - consider: - Taking public transport or carpool to where you need to go. - See what's on the horizon in your council for sustainable transport, e.g., safe cycleways, shared and walking paths - Write to local reps about prioritising sustainable transport in your area - Start a discussion with a friend or colleague on sustainable transport - Reflect on the difficulty of others to get around without strong infrastructure like cycleways, or public transport access Happy travelling! #transport #transportday

Today, November 26th, marks the first-ever United Nations World Sustainable Transport Day. As António Guterres, United Nations General Secretary said: “This first World Sustainable Transport Day reminds us that the road to a better future depends on cleaner and greener transportation systems.” Every ride, every choice, and every innovation matters. What’s one change you’re making to make your commute—or your company—more sustainable? #WorldSustainableTransportDay #ZeroEmissions
The Road to Sustainability Starts Here. (And it’s closer than you think.) Every day, transport powers economies, connects people, and drives development. Yet, it also contributes 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions—making it one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize. But here’s the good news: Sustainable transport isn’t just a challenge; it’s an opportunity. It’s about creating mobility solutions that are: ✔️ Safe ✔️ Affordable ✔️ Resilient ✔️ Low-emission Imagine a world where electric vehicles rule the roads, renewable fuels power our skies, and public transport systems are cleaner, greener, and more connected. This isn’t a far-off dream. It’s a path forward that can help us: 🌍 Combat climate change 🚲 Promote equity and accessibility 💼 Create jobs and boost economies Today, November 26th, marks the first-ever United Nations World Sustainable Transport Day. World Sustainable Transport Day Date: November 26 What is Sustainable Transport? Sustainable transport is the provision of services and infrastructure for the mobility of people and goods that: Advances economic and social development for current and future generations. Is safe, affordable, accessible, efficient, and resilient. Minimizes environmental impacts, including greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants. Defined by the UN Secretary-General’s High-level Advisory Group in 2016, sustainable transport is a means to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs), not an end in itself. Why Sustainable Transport Matters Transport systems connect people, promote trade, and foster economic growth, but they are also responsible for: Approximately 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Heavy reliance on fossil fuels, with 91% of transport energy coming from non-renewable sources. The challenge lies in transforming these systems to become more environmentally friendly while maintaining their role as drivers of economic growth, poverty reduction, and social inclusion. Key Objectives of Sustainable Transport Universal access: Ensure equitable transport systems for all, including underserved populations. Enhanced safety: Reduce fatalities and injuries from transport-related incidents. Reduced climate and environmental impact: Transition to low-carbon energy and minimize emissions. Resilience: Build systems that adapt to climate challenges and other disruptions. Efficiency: Optimize transport infrastructure and services to reduce costs and resource use. Global Goals Linked to Sustainable Transport SDG 1: End poverty through access to economic opportunities. SDG 5: Empower women by providing safer, accessible mobility. SDG 10: Reduce inequalities in access to infrastructure. SDG 13: Combat climate change by cutting emissions. UN General Assembly Recognition The UN General Assembly established World Sustainable Transport Day to emphasize the importance of: Integrated intermodal systems: Seamlessly linking highways, railways, waterways, and ports. Resilient infrastructure: Minimizing energy, land, and resource use while lowering emissions. Global collaboration: Sharing best practices and advancing international trade. How to Mark the Day Educate the public about sustainable transport systems. Promote green transportation innovations and low-carbon infrastructure. Living here in the Pacific, we know how crucial sustainable transport is—not just for connecting our islands but for protecting our environment, our health, and our future. The latest United Nations ESCAP report dives deep into the challenges and opportunities for sustainable transport in Asia and the Pacific, and it hits close to home. Transport is one of our biggest links to the world, yet it’s also one of our biggest challenges. Emissions are rising, road safety remains a struggle, and too many communities lack affordable, reliable transport options. As the report shares, “transport isn’t just about getting from A to B; it’s about creating systems that connect people with opportunity, while protecting our planet.” Key takeaways from the report: Emissions and Climate Impact: Asia-Pacific transport emissions have increased by 34% over the last decade. We’re facing the brunt of climate change, and low-carbon solutions in transport could make a world of difference. Inclusive Systems: Less than 20% of the workforce in transport are women, and inclusivity remains a big goal. We need to rethink transport so it works for everyone, everywhere. Local Action, Global Impact: Regional collaboration is more than a buzzword—it’s essential. By working together across borders, we can push for changes that make a real impact. At MCST, we’re proud to be part of this movement toward greener, more inclusive transport. Change isn’t easy, but with strong partnerships and voices from across the Pacific, we’re committed to making sustainable transport the norm—not the exception. Let’s keep pushing forward. #PacificVoices #SustainableTransport #ClimateAction #ESCAP #Decarbonization #OurOceansOurFuture Read the report here:

A sustainable world is a place where the environment, social equity, and economic prosperity exist in harmony. This balance is disrupted, and it’s imperative for us to restore it. Every company, including ours D'Ieteren, has a crucial role in this endeavor. Passenger road transportation is currently responsible for around 12% of global CO2 emissions in Belgium. At the same time, our lives and livelihoods depend on mobility. Could you imagine a world without mobility? Obviously not. That’s why the way we all move needs to consider today’s environmental and social challenges. Our Sustainability Roadmap outlines how we are rising to this challenge. We detail the commitments we’ve made so far and their outcomes. Is our plan perfect? Not yet. There are aspects we’re still exploring, and we’ve set timelines for these. Time is of the essence, and we are focused on moving forward.

4w"Sustainable transport refers to mobility systems that minimise environmental impact, promote social inclusivity, and support economic growth." => minimizing environmental impact and supporting economic growth are two antagonistic objectives. It's fine, since only the former matters : economic growth is not (and has never been) a relevant social objective per se. Economy is a tool/a mean, not an end, and in the developed world, the pursuit of economic growth is actually detrimental to the achievement of various relevant social objectives. So you may better frame sustainable transport as "mobility systems that minimise environmental impact, promote social inclusivity, support access to basic needs for all, and enhance community's autonomy and resilience". And this is perfectly compatible with a post-growth (non-growing) economy Thanks ;)
