Misrepresentation and fake qualifications The recent court judgement regarding the sentencing of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), former Chief Engineer, who was revered as Dr. Daniel Mthimkhulu following his gross misrepresentation and doctored resume' which earned him appointment and promotion at the state-owned business, has had everyone talking. The Human Resources department had been accused of corruption and incompetence for failing to perform the background check on the candidate, mostly from the citizens who have neither worked at the department nor worked closely with the department, nor read about the challenges faced by HR junior employees, nor conducted the research on talent management. The HR department, which is tasked with talent attraction, recruitment, training, reward, and retention, is also a bone of contention, as is the procurement department. The chief engineer is a senior position, which would normally woo the interest of the executive, including the CEO, COO, and CFO. The assertion that the executive fell victim to deception lacks credibility. This is not an isolated case; South African Airways has had a fake pilot without Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL), Mr. William Chandler, who flew over 20 years without being detected. The pilots must renew their licenses every two years, and one wonders how he managed to successfully stay in the game for that long without being sent off. To prevent such from happening, the executive should empower the HR personnel to do their jobs without any undue interference and influence, while they provide a professional oversight role as dictated by relevant legislation, policies, procedures, and industrial frameworks.
