Over the last few weeks I've been gathering insights, digesting a plethora of research and chatting to some really great experts all on the impact of generational differences in the workplace. I now have a slightly unhealthy obsession on what is actually the most common form of workplace discrimination - ageism. It's often not getting the attention is needs to as overshadowed by other DEI priorities. Despite the battle for talent, those at the beginning of their careers (early careers) and older workers are both often getting written off or overlooked as a result of negative stereotypes and unhelpful media narratives. I'm hoping we can surface some of the issues, dispel some of the narratives and share our insights along with tangible tips for creating fairer, healthier and happier multi-generational workplaces. For business leaders, it’s important to recognise this age gap and ensure that colleagues who have grown up in very different eras can still work together and communicate effectively. But how to approach this issue in a sensitive and productive way? By encouraging open and positive conversations between colleagues, businesses can break down unhelpful misconceptions and stereotypes and encourage empathy and understanding between team members. If we can avoid negative stereotyping and be clearer about the ways we like to work and receive information, we can start to build positive relationships across all generations.
