I could if I wanted to…Branding experts would tell me to…So would the world. But I’m not. What is it? Rebrand what I’ve learned. So what do I do instead? I attribute what I have learned from my teachers and mentors to them. Could I repackage and rebrand things and slap my name on it? Absolutely I could. Most do. Jim Camp gave me the opportunity to transform my life and those I’ve coached. And that’s why, in every workshop, I am careful to tell people what I’ve learned from Jim. And what I have also learned from and incorporated from Gary Noesner. I feel it is important to give proper attribution. No, it is not flattery when people take other people’s work and present them as their own when it is not. It is stealing. (Change my mind). When I do it I recognize those that they’ve paved a path for me. They blazed a trail. I get to ride their coattails. Jim was HARD on me. Ask Todd Camp…he knows. He witnessed some of those interactions. He can testify. Jim once even kicked me out. Yes he did. Ask Todd. 😬 However we reconciled and we were set to deliver training at a conference he was planning in CA before his untimely death. His mentoring and coaching, which was incredibly tough (the training was daily!) made me the kind of negotiation coach I am today. When he first worked with me he said “Allan, I can help you get to where I am in ten years, not 25!” He did that in 5 years!!! If you look at the recommendations in my profile, know that most of them are reaping the benefit of what Jim passed down to me. They thank me. But what they may not realize is…they’re also thanking Jim. RIP Jim… * If you’re interested, check out his books: - Start with NO...The Negotiating Tools that the Pros Don't Want You to Know by Jim Camp - No: The Only Negotiating System You Need for Work and Home by Jim Camp Those would be a good place to start if you’re pursuing negotiation excellence. #negotiationskills #negotiationtraining #negotiationtribe
Thanks Allan for this. You’re correct that many are taking the method or pieces of it and claiming it as their own. Most of these folkes are opperating from within universities and/or over seas. Once it’s in the public domain you should expect it. Hence, this is why he wanted to be known as a coach and not a trainer. He knew he could only take responsibility for what he tought by coaching real deals from the trenches. And that is why we continue to do so all day every day. There are so many professionals and teams who need help. Let’s press on and help as many as we can who are coachable, open to a new way of thinking, and comfortable being uncomfortable. Thanks for perpetuating Jim’s work through your own and giving him credit.
Thanks for posting this, Allan. Jim helped see the folly of a very bad decision I was going to make in my personal life, and in retrospect he was able to do it because he was fully engaged in his negotiation system during our 5-minute conversation. He was special, of course, but I think he himself would credit his being in system for what he did for me. With his help, I was able to 'see the pain' and make a hard decision that I still believe saved me and my kids. Like Allan, he also fired me! That was not fun for him or me, but again, he was always 'in system', and our final conversation was also gold in retrospect. Glad to see his legacy continues and welcome conversations with people who want to continue it. Applications extend far beyond business.
Great message in general and about Jim. I concur with you that his mentoring and coaching was incredibly tough and incredibly valuable. Thanks for sharing.
Can't even imagine being in sales and not reading, understanding and utilizing his system
It’s called appropriation and artists have been doing it for hundreds if not thousands of years
Jim was not just a good man, but the best amongst the best. Thank you Allan Tsang this is a great post and I encourage my network to read and Re-read Jim’s advice on this subject.
I learned so much from Jim. I, too, always give him credit at the beginning of all my talks.

1yAdditional thought. It’s nice to have his books as a reference. But those who’ve worked with him personally as well as having access to the BrainX system, the Negotiator-Pro app when they were around…that was the ultimate negotiation training package.
