Wilderlands were selected from over 243 applicants across three categories including biodiversity monitoring and measurement, incentivising demand and innovative financing for biodiversity, and strengthening local value chains. Wilderlands now joins a global community of 452 Top Innovators as well as 89 ‘Top Investors’ and 351 ecosystem partners from across the globe, all part of the Uplink ecosystem. UpLink, launched in 2020 by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with Deloitte and Salesforce, has built an open innovation platform ecosystem fostering entrepreneurial solutions for global challenges aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Biodiversity Challenge was their most recent competition. I have taken the liberty of copying a couple of phrases from my admired Pascal Finette, extracted from his last TheHeretic.org newsletter: “As an entrepreneur or business #leader, crafting the right #story can make all the #difference in winning over customers, investors, and the public. […] The takeaway is clear: In a complex, noisy world, #simplicity cuts through.” I can only agree with him. I have experienced how true those statements are in the process of sharing #ProjectSterna with the potentially interested parties and have seen their very #positive reaction. It’s #ValueProposition (Wing for Wing. Regenerative Flying) is short, simple and easy to understand once you know its purpose. Through interdisciplinary collaboration among experts in #biodiversity conservation, #business, and public engagement, #ProjectSterna is a proactive approach to #sustainability, enhancing #societal #commitment in alignment with the Global Biodiversity Framework and the #SDG of the 2030 Agenda, creating a novel business-client #communication channel. I still have not announced to which sector it is addressed, so stay tunned…

🌿 Thrilled to see our #NatureTech journey recognized in The NatureTech Memos’ list of top investors in the sector 🙌 Tackling the climate crisis begins with a simple truth: nature is our strongest ally. 🌾 One of our first moves at Serena was backing CarbonFarm, a startup selected for the inaugural C10 Index by STATION F and Marble. CarbonFarm is helping reduce emissions and promote sustainable agriculture. In November 2023, our Managing Partner, Xavier Lorphelin, co-authored the Nature Tech Report with Nature4Climate and MRV Collective, marking the first time a VC has contributed to such a report. This report provided an overview of major trends related to nature-based solutions. Building on this, in 2024, we released an updated study highlighting the VC funding trends in Nature Tech innovations. These investments are opening up exciting new opportunities for environmentally-driven technologies. We’ll be sharing the next update of the report soon—stay tuned! Ollie Potter

Hello from London, where I’m camping all week long. But…no tent or bug spray. I was invited by The Earthshot Prize  and Bloomberg Philanthropies, to represent Harvest at the first-ever Innovation Camp at London Climate Action Week. It’s a crazy week, in all the right ways. Just yesterday, I learned about solutions to help identify and address loss of biodiversity, and then a deep-dive on innovators in the waste reduction space, from plastic-eating fungus to mushroom leather producers.  We rounded it out with a networking session with Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy community.  Not a bad start! Why am I telling you all this? It’s a (slightly-more-than-) humble brag, sure, but also to let you know just how exciting it is for Harvest to have been chosen to be here. We’re all learning how to  challenge, stretch and build on our unique approaches to combatting the climate and biodiversity crises - and I can’t wait to come home to California and use everything I’ve learned here to drive even bigger impact with Harvest. Shout-out to innovators from the BEV community, including Berkeley-based Terabase Energy, Rondo Energy founder John O'Donnell, and Chris Anderson from Vantem modular housing. SO excited to finally be able to share that NatureMetrics is one of this year's finalists of The Earthshot Prize! It's an incredible honour to follow in the footsteps of some of the people I most admire (the likes of Thomas W. Crowther with Restor & Florent Kaiser with Acción Andina) and to sit alongside the other 14 2024 Finalists that represent such an astonishing breadth & diversity of solutions to help address the challenges we face in addressing #climate change, #pollution and #biodiversity destruction. It's increasingly clear that addressing these crises requires changing the system, and that doesn't come from a single solution; it comes from #innovating everywhere, all at once - including in the technological, societal, regulatory, legal and economic spheres. The Earthshot Prize is unique in recognising efforts across this whole spectrum. For our part, we're determined to help create a system that drives true #accountability for impact on #nature *on the ground* at the same time as enabling adaptive management to optimise outcomes for the #biodiversity we ultimately all depend on. It's time to end the excuse that biodiversity is too complex to measure, or that outcome-based requirements for finance are impractical. I'd like to give a massive shout-out to all the members of our team (past and present) who have been with us on the journey so far - through all the ups and downs and the never-ending challenges that come with #entrepreneurship. 💲 🌳 To make the business case for nature, should we focus on inputs? 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ewHyUhVU We have largely focused on the narrative and quantification of the risk associated with #nature to drive corporate engagement with nature. And that is an important piece of the puzzle, but maybe not the easiest to make a business case for corporates to pay for nature’s services today. Irina Likhachova shared with me a different angle that made so much sense and I was shocked I hadn't come across it before. It was one of my biggest "duh!" moments in the last couple of years. Here’s what she shared: 1️⃣ Ecosystem services are an essential input for production. 2️⃣ Today, corporates are getting those inputs for free but don't have any contracted supply for those inputs. 3️⃣ Nature finance is about securing the supply of those inputs for decades to come And she shared one more note on #biodiversity that is another angle I hadn't heard before but could be an important angle to engage business on biodiversity 👇 🐝 Biodiversity ensures that ecosystems are at their optimal level of production of ecosystem services.
