I sat in on a few sessions at the Product Marketing Alliance here in Seattle this week. I enjoyed the discussions about AI (lots of them), positioning, storytelling, GTM. While I took away some useful topical insights, I also came away with a personal insight. I realized that throughout my career, I’ve done much of the work called “product marketing” without consistently calling it that. - Spearheading customer interviews to discover pain points  - Uncovering the customer’s “truth”   - Blending data + intuition to make decisions  - Coming up with a hypothesis and proposing solutions to test/address problems in the customer journey  - Working with the product team before the product is fully built, informing the downstream roadmap  - GTM planning - Conducting competitive analysis  - Championing the user/buyer - Facilitating naming  And I love this stuff (except for the naming if I’m being honest). Why is Product Marketing a more common job description in B2B tech or just big tech vs B2C, e-commerce, CPG and DTC? Product Marketing ≠ Customer Marketing Let me break this down: 🚀 Product marketing is about winning the market: - Obsessing over competitor analysis - Defining your ideal customer profile - Nailing product positioning - Owning your GTM strategy - Making sure your product succeeds 🤝 Customer marketing is about winning loyalty: - Building thriving user communities - Turning customers into advocates - Driving product adoption - Spotting expansion opportunities - Making customers successful and shouting about it Here's what most companies miss: You need both. They're complementary, not competitive. 💃 Product marketing brings customers through the door. 🏆 Customer marketing turns them into champions. Get this right, and you create a flywheel ⚙️: Better products → happier customers → stronger growth Use this template to show the similarities, differences, and advocate for these two critical functions. A lot of our work in product marketing is playing the long game - personas, positioning, strategic narratives - but I think balancing these with some quick wins that help drive revenue is a great way to showcase the value of product marketing to stakeholders that don't quite understand what we do. One of my tips? Dive into customer campaigns! Especially in start-ups and scale-ups, most of the times we're sending emails or in-app messages to our customers are during the onboarding period and when we launch a new feature. But what about the in-between or after? Use campaigns to help customers get the most out of what they're paying for, discover features they might have missed, and learn how to do their job better. You likely be increasing LTV and open up the door for an easy upsell (hello revenue 👋 ). I shared the rest of my tips to drive revenue by year-end with my friends at SaaSiest along with some other B2B marketers who have some great ideas I'll definitely be borrowing 💡.
