I see that I haven't posted on LinkedIn for a while so thought I would provide a brief update. Over the last 6 months or so, as I have grown into my interim/fractional finance career, I have been involved in a number of very different but also very interesting assignments. I really enjoy the variety of work, the diversity of people and management teams I work with and the different industry sectors. I often see advertised corporate finance roles, whether FT, interim or fractional, insist on having experience or time spent in a specific sub-sector, sometimes its not negotiable. I still remain strongly of the opinion that, as a senior finance professional, skills are transferable across disparate market sectors and it pays to have a different set of eyes and experiences to problem-solve, improve processes and systems as well as offer suggestions for commercial opportunities. Any skills or insights that you may not specifically have in a sector you have not worked in before can be picked up and learnt if you have the curiosity, energy and "can-do-roll-up-your sleeves" type attitude. Some of the work undertaken recently include: 1. Financial Due Diligence assignment for a PE Fund's proposed acquisition which has been finalised and announced. 2. Finance-related project work for an e-commerce fulfilment business. 3. Just started as a fractional CFO for a SaaS-based Tech company operating in the Financial Services space. Given my IB and PE background, over and above my core CFO/FD finance skills, I am always on the look-out for assigments or projects in the M&A (both buy-side and sell-side) and fund-raising space. An ideal role would be a CFO/FD role for a PE/VC-backed portfolio business which is on the acquisition trail or requires some form of M&A/corporate finance skills and experience. „As a last resort, I can still hire an interim solution.“ Agree? Guess you should reconsider your evaluation then. Interim capacities are often perceived as the last way out if the hiring process is not successful. As this is of course an important part of our service portfolio, there are way more situations when adding temporary capacities to your finance team is beneficial. Some examples: - Adding an external perspective to assess your systems and processes eradicates operational blindness which inevitably comes up in each settled team. If you feel you are moving too slow or get stuck too often, an interim support can help to refactor your finance operations while keeping operational performance up and running. - If your team has a lot of experienced experts but no mid management, your finance lead might lack a sparring partner to discuss challenges and outweigh alternatives. External support might not only close this gap but also manage any upcoming projects with similar level of seniority, ensuring nothing falls through the cracks in tough times. - You have a stellar Head of Finance that might develop to CFO, but is not there yet? Hire an interim CFO with the explicit task to pave the way, shape the new role and develop the person. With the clear perspective that the interim support will leave, the motivation will be kept up as the future promotion won‘t be considered a false promise but an actual development plan. - You are embarking a journey with rapid growth and want to ensure early on your finance won‘t break if you go 10x, but don‘t have enough to do for a full time CFO (yet)? Getting a fractional CFO on board for a few days a week helps you to have all topics covered with a lot of knowledge - flexible, reliable and at a fair cost - always building the function having in mind it has to work with an internal team soon, allowing for quick transitions. - You are planning to raise funds for your company but need to translate your vision into numbers? Interim CFOs can support you in translating your thoughts into investors‘ language - not only incrrasimg the chance of closing a round but also taking a lot of work from the CEO‘s plate, allowing to keep working on growth while running the fundraise in parallel. I hear it all the time. Finance pros say they want a role where they can ‘be more strategic.’ Whenever I ask them what that means, they don’t really know. 80% of the time it's something I hear early career finance pros say when they are bored of the monthly cycle, and want something more ‘high level.’ Or when you read on LinkedIn that finance should be a ‘strategic business partner.’ Followed by a bunch of interminable corporate waffle. Being ‘strategic’ means something specific …strategy is detail. For the CFO being strategic means 7 things: 1. A voice in the C-Suite 2. Modeling strategic options 3. Aligning finance to serve the strategy 4. Role-modeling and communicating the strategy 5. Connecting strategy to the FP&A cycle 6. Measuring the success of strategy (and its execution) 7. Funding the business plan So next time you say you want to 'be more strategic', be more specific first.
