Was it really a good jobs report? Last Friday the latest employment figures were released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Overall, 300K more people had jobs and the national unemployment rate dropped from 4.1% in February to 3.8% in March. Many gave glowing reports about these results — digging deeper there are 2 troubling signs: 1. Much of the increase was in part-time jobs, with the number of people holding multiple jobs increasing significantly. When the economy is humming, full-time employment, with increasing wages and solid benefits, increases. 2. 71k of the increase in employment was due to government employing more people. Government tends to be the employer of last resort, indicating weakness in private sector hiring. During boom times, private sector opportunities are more attractive and fewer folks pursue a government job. For #Veterans, the report had disappointing news. Fewer Veterans were employed and the unemployment rate crept up. In March, 257K Veterans were unemployed. If the goal is zero Veterans unemployed, the challenge continues to be examining why so many Veterans who are looking for jobs, don’t find them. A possibility is the struggle Veterans face going through the hiring process at a company that doesn’t really understand their expertise and what else they bring to the table. Company Veteran leaders/Veteran Resource Groups need to do more to address this situation. Another possibility is Veterans are looking in the wrong places. That is, they should be planning and preparing for jobs in industries that face a shortage of workers. One industry is Manufacturing. With retirements, lack of skills training, and innovations, they face a tight labor market and are seeking ways to attract new talent. They are experimenting with new ways to recruit, offering training and apprenticeships. Manufacturing isn’t the hard hat work that often comes to mind. Today it involves tech, robots, and analytics. It requires agile employees/managers. Military experience should prepare many Veterans for these opportunities. To learn more: https://lnkd.in/ei4sNYnS Kelly Barner takes 2 industry leaders through their company’s work and the talent needs they face. They candidly describe their needs and how labor shortages negatively affect profitability. Notable – “There are 600k job openings in Manufacturing” We need to do more to communicate opportunities like this to transitioning Service members and Veterans. It would be great if military/Veteran influencers on LinkedIn would talk more about jobs in Manufacturing (and similar industries). Zero Veterans unemployed isn’t a bridge too far if we can get information about the many great opportunities that exist across our economy. #VHV | Veterans Helping Veterans #Jobs #Careers
A combination of factors, including retirement rates, lower birth rates, and generational differences in worker preference have led to particularly acute shortages in the manufacturing industry workforce. But as the shortages grow, so do the associated opportunities. Unlike the perception many people have of manufacturing work, these jobs involve the latest in robotics and automation. They often come with beneficial educational opportunities. And the field is inclusive, with companies actively reaching out to women and other groups who might not have otherwise considered pursuing roles in the industry. In this LIVE webinar, Jack Snodgrass from Securitas Technology and Weston Norris from Xometry will join Kelly Barner to talk about how labor shortages are impacting production costs and workforce trends. At the end of last year I gave a quick talk for Manufacturing Dive moderated by on the labor challenges that the manufacturing sector is facing. As I want developing the talk, it ended up that the intro section ended up being a pretty good 101 review of the biggest workforce pain points that are plaguing the industry. During the talk I got a lot of feedback that it did a good job illustrating how we as an industry "got here", so I thought I'd share that section of the presentation here. What are your thoughts? Did I miss any key challenges? If you'd like to see the rest of the deck, leave a comment below and I'll DM it to you! #Manufacturing #Labor #FutureOfWork #IndustrialAutomation #MidMarketManufacturing
