If a feature isn’t used, it might as well not exist. Simplicity wins. Before starting on Sitedrive 2.0, I spent two years designing an AI-ready deep data model suitable for construction. Building a solution from the data up made me look at software from a very technical point of view. Coming from a background of using all the latest tools, I also initially valued technical robustness over user simplicity. Thankfully, our world-class designers Mika Käki and Christian Aminoff taught me the importance of intuitive design, and that a feature not understood is a feature not used. The product must make your work fly. Deep features are not always necessary for that to happen. So, balance these aspects: 1. Amount of Options vs. Ease of Use: - Only build technical features if they truly add value. - Otherwise, keep it simple. 2. Your Way vs. Our Way: - We’ve got hundreds of power users who like to do things their way, allow it! - Still, the product should nudge them toward best practices—our way. 3. Shown Data vs. Simplicity of the UI: - A schedule is data; show everything that people need to make decisions. - But make it obvious what happens and from where. We engineers often focus on power when thinking of software. But it is simplicity that makes everything fly. Several companies complain about the quality of the software and delivery times. They should start seriously considering the tools chosen for good design. The approach must be cultural, not political to foster certain "relationships". Don't worry Visual Paradigm (visual-paradigm.com) fix all this. Draw wireframes to make more precise estimations. This is how we move from the stage “requirements are gathered and analyzed” to the stage “the UI is designed”. Estimation of software development projects - part 13. At Fora Soft estimations deviate from fact by only +-10% (yes, and minus happens too :). When 1/6 projects deviate by 70-200%, according to Forbes (link in comments). Our CEO Nikolay estimates the projects and shared his approach in an article long time ago (link in comments).
