Who likes predictability 📊 in software? We don't want software to act differently without context. We want to know how a system will react. We want to feel like things are connected, which leads to trust. If a system uses 🤷♂️ non-standard components, it can lead to disjointed experiences. Users feel like they are using multiple systems instead of one. One of the biggest requests I hear is "we want it to feel like one experience." Taking time to make sure your interactions, designs, and flows are 📊 predictable is crucial to user retention. 📊 Predictable software uses standard UI components and flows. There is a visual consistency, even across multiple product experiences. If your product is struggling with non-standard components or predictability reach out to evaluate your digital product using the IMPRESS․design framework. #design #uidesign #predictability

📢📢📢 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT (2/2) 📢📢📢 My last post had a good news message: All the right things happening for your business software, thanks to user-centered design. But here's the "we'll just skip the design process" scenario – your product (and project) will probably end up with: • Nasty surprises 😧 • Expensive rebuilds 💸 • Release delays ⏳ • Unhappy customers 😠 Give your powerful product a fighting chance, and meet your users where their actual needs are 💪. #UXdesign #usercentreddesign #businesssoftware #enterprisesoftware

𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐝𝐞? Stop blaming the tests. You've got a design problem. Here's why. 👇 I remember a project where we had dozens of tests running through the UI. Felt great, like a safety net. Until marketing requested a simple change to the navigation structure. Boom! 💥 100+ tests failed overnight. The development team's response? "𝑊𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑛'𝑡 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛. 𝐼𝑡'𝑙𝑙 𝑏𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑘 𝑡𝑜𝑜 𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑦 𝑡𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑠." That's when I realized we had it backwards. Our tests weren't protecting our code - they were holding it hostage. Here's the truth: If your tests are fragile, your design is fragile. The solution? Design for testability from the start: 1. Create a specific testing API that bypasses volatile parts (like the UI) 2. Decouple test structure from application structure 3. Keep business rules testable without touching the interface 4. Give your testing API superpowers - let it bypass expensive resources and security when needed 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧'𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 - 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲'𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐭. Treat them that way in your design, or watch them become your biggest maintenance nightmare. Ever had your tests turn into handcuffs rather than safety nets? Many businesses Power Platform solutions are like houses built on sand. Remember that parable? The foolish man who found it faster and cheaper to build on sand. Oh, how he laughed at the man building on the solid rock foundation. Until the rain came tumbling down! Power Platform is like that. With limited skills anyone can build something simple. A basic Power BI report linked to one clean Excel sheet. A simple Power App for one sub-process in a small department. But as that solution starts to build out and grow in complexity, the problems start. Poor performance. Bugs that come as if from nowhere. Only one guy understands how the solution is built, and he could leave! Painfully clunky UI/UX. Difficulty implementing access and security protocols (everyone can see and do everything). The list goes on and on. So how do you avoid this scenario? It begins with the realisation that if your Power Platform solution is to have enterprise value and not just be a simple solution for one small use case, you must follow best practices right from the start. The appeal of the one-day course, then setting Bob from finance or Karen from IT loose is alluring, as it sounds cost effective and "agile". But without proper training and ongoing support, or using an expert (whether in-house or externally) to build the foundations first, your solution may be fine, for a while. Until the rain comes tumbling down!
