FAO today launched a new action-oriented, country-focused initiative to reduce the need for antimicrobials on farms, amid the growing threat posed by #AntimicrobialResistance in the food and agriculture sector, impacting terrestrial and aquatic animal health, plants and the environment and causing significant economic losses to farmers across the globe. Reduce the Need for Antimicrobials on Farms for Sustainable Agrifood Systems Transformation (RENOFARM) initiative aims to provide countries with policy support, technical assistance, capacity building, and knowledge sharing to help reduce the need for antimicrobials in livestock production, prioritizing animal health and welfare, mitigating environmental impact, and enhancing food security and nutrition thus, helping to achieve the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals. #SDGs #AMR #RENOFARM https://lnkd.in/dYcxtWRh

We are what we eat and what we eat eats. Innovative pathways in sustainable agri-food systems are better and go farther when the "human-planet-ecosystem services" triangle approach is at the core. Great news, #FAO! #Onehealth #Innovation

How does climate change affect animal health and livestock production? 🏜Droughts are expanding worldwide, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, withering pasturelands and making it difficult for farmers to keep their livestock fed and healthy. 🌡️☀️Increases in temperature and humidity strengthen certain pathogens that can worsen disease outbreaks, affecting both animal and human health. 🦠 Diseases such as Bluetongue have expanded into northern Europe, Australia, South America and Africa now that the midge species that transmit the viruses are able to survive winter at higher latitudes. Discover how improving animal health can, in turn, lead to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions which helps mitigate climate change: https://lnkd.in/eZkhBURQ

A win for #OneHealth in Mexico! David Soriano García, Mexico's General Director of Agro-alimentary, Aquaculture, and Fisheries Safety participated in the "One Health approach in the Trade of Agricultural Products" forum where he stressed that "One Health" integrates knowledge and collaboration of the different areas related to human, animal and environmental health. This is a step forward in globally spreading the message that animal welfare is crucial to both environmental and human health. #animalwelfare https://lnkd.in/gzWWWu54

Successfully completed the "Sustainable for Food Safety through Livestock Production: A One Health Approach" training program! This certificate is from the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), an autonomous organization of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Government of India. The program was held in collaboration with the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. The program focused on sustainable food safety through livestock production using a One Health approach. This approach recognizes the interconnection between animal, human and environmental health. *The program likely covered topics such as: -Zoonotic diseases: diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans -Antimicrobial resistance -Biosecurity measures for livestock production -The importance of food safety #manage #kvasu #nationainstituteofagriculturalextensionmanagement #ministryofagriculture #govtofindia

💡 “If we want to save our #antimicrobials and minimize the risk of future #zoonoses and #pandemics, we need to move to “health-oriented systems” for the rearing of #animals, systems in which good health is inherent in the farming methods rather than being dependent on the routine use of antimicrobials.” 👉 Read the insightful review on #livestockfarming and “health-oriented systems” by our Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Peter Stevenson OBE of Compassion in World Farming, available at: https://lnkd.in/g24QrRyP 🎇 Peter is #ChiefPolicyAdvisor of Compassion in World Farming and is a qualified UK lawyer. He received an OBE in October 2020 from the Queen for “services to farm animal welfare”. He studied economics and law at Trinity College Cambridge and played a leading role in winning the European Union (EU) bans on veal crates, battery cages and sow stalls as well as a new status for animals in EU law as sentient beings. #OneHealth #Zoonosis #AntimicrobialResistance #AnimalWelfare Wiley

An incredible initiative launched by #FAO on 25th April to transform the #agrifood business to a more #sustainable system by focusing on managing and curbing the rising threat of #AMR. The initiative Reduce the Need for Antimicrobials on Farms for Sustainable Agrifood Systems Transformation (RENOFARM) is already being piloted in the poultry sector in Indonesia, with other pilots underway in Uganda and Nigeria. "FAO’s goal is to implement the initiative in more than 100 countries in alignment with its partners under the Quadripartite #OneHealth approach - the World Health Organization (#WHO), the UN Environment Programme (#UNEP), and the World Organisation for Animal Health (#WOAH)." Enormous effort and resources have been directed to making sure the #antibiotics remain effective for the greater good of #human, #animal and the #environment. The rise of #intensive #animal #agriculture in Sub-Saharan #Africa is a critical issue that demands strategic action from animal advocates. Our latest report with Animal Advocacy Africa offers a comprehensive #roadmap for effective advocacy in the region, based on extensive research and insights. Despite its many drawbacks in the case of animal welfare as well as humanitarian concerns from food security to climate change, many political leaders perceive intensive farming to be a solution for #foodsecurity and #economicgrowth. Since the 1990s, there has been a dramatic increase in animal slaughter in Africa, correlating with the rise of factory farming. #Meat #consumption is projected to grow substantially by 2050, with beef consumption growing by nearly 200%, poultry by 211%, and pork by 200%. While much of Africa’s meat is currently imported from #Europe, #America, and #Asia, there are increasing global efforts to direct finance, training, and other resources towards establishing intensive farms in Africa. A large-scale shift towards industrial animal agriculture could have disastrous consequences. Beyond the well-known concerns, widespread industrial animal agriculture in Africa would disrupt African communities, disrespect traditional livestock practices, and destroy the livelihoods of pastoral farmers. Guided by a robust country prioritisation framework, we focused on #Nigeria, #Ghana, and #Ethiopia, conducting thorough desk research and interviewing key stakeholders across various fields. Our report aims to provide a detailed analysis of the forces driving industrial farming in Africa, alongside twelve #actionable #recommendations to counter its negative impacts. https://lnkd.in/djayFAWX With thanks to Animal Charity Evaluators for funding this research.
