According to Doug Eatwell's new analysis of our 2024 Summer Survey data, a huge number of ex-vegetarians could have been retained if veggie options had better affordability (19%), sensory qualities (19%), variety (14%), and availability (12%). #Alternative #proteins have a massive role to play in keeping people off meat and making plant-based lifestyles more sustainable for the long term, calling attention to the importance of innovation in affordability and variety of plant-based foods to meet consumer needs. A new meta-analysis of 100 studies shows interventions that mention or portray farmed animals consistently reduced meat consumption, purchasing, and intentions — with meaningfully large effects and minimal risk of backlash. The numbers speak for themselves. This chart shows the staggering scale of animal slaughter each year: ❗ 2 trillion wild-caught fish ❗ 100 billion farmed fish ❗ 75 billion chickens In contrast, larger mammals (like cows and pigs) barely register as a thin sliver - highlighting the Small Body Problem, where smaller animals such as fish and chicken must be killed in larger numbers to produce the same amount of food. E.g. 1 cow = 200 chickens = thousands of fish or shrimp Well-intentioned dietary changes are pushing demand toward smaller animals, thereby (unintentionally) increasing animal suffering. When you consider the numbers, discussions about animal welfare should be much more about fish and chickens than about cows and pigs. These are the amounts of animals that we globally kill for food in a year. The mammals (cows, pigs, sheep, goats...) are in that tiny yellow sliver in the middle.

As the year comes close to wrapping up, here's some food for thought: 30% of vegans first considered the switch because of conversations with a friend or family member (17%) or posts they saw on socials (13%). With Veganuary around the corner, this graph is a good reminder that posts and chats can make a difference. Share the experience, you might just inspire change 🍏

This is the first third-party analysis of our 2024 Summer Survey I have seen, and it's a super interesting one from Doug Eatwell!! You can access the full dataset for free here! https://osf.io/m7nzb/

According to new data collected by Bryant Research almost 40% of consumers in the UK have, at some stage in their lives, tried a vegetarian or vegan diet, yet only 8% have remained vegetarian or vegan. This means that eight out of every ten people in the UK who tried a plant-based diet failed to adopt it as part of their lifestyle. This article examines factors that contribute to this high rate of attrition among consumers looking to replace animal protein with plant-based alternatives and draws some novel conclusions for alternative protein providers. #plantbased #alternativeprotein #altprotein

Thoughts for a Friday: How do we drive the shift towards plant-based choices? We identify this as an interplay of push AND pull factors, as well as thoughtful choice architecture (balance motivation with accessibility): 🔴 Push factors such as compelling messages about the environment, health, ethical impacts of animal-based diets are raising awareness. Campaigns about zoonotic diseases, antibiotic resistance, climate urgency, and compassion for animals make a powerful case for change. 🔴 Pull factors like the growing availability of (ever-improving) plant-based alternatives is making sustainable choices more appealing and accessible. 🔴 Choice architecture like including plant-based options prominently on menus, clear vegan labelling, and small nudges on how choices are presented like plant-based defaults, can all have a big impact on consumer behaviour. ❗ It's an absolutely shocking statistic - 70% of antibiotics worldwide are given to farm animals, not humans ❗ A new article from Our World in Data shows how #factoryfarming is fuelling a global crisis of #antibiotic #resistance. 🔴 Animals raised in cramped, unhygienic factory farms are administered 4x more antibiotics than those in better conditions - just to keep them alive. This overuse of antibiotics creates the perfect breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which can then jump to humans. This results in people dying from infections that no longer respond to antibiotics. The World Health Organization has called this a "silent pandemic." Antibiotic resistance is about the systemic change we need in how we produce food, and how we demand better animal welfare. At the 2024 #Effective #Altruism Conference in Utrecht, #Netherlands, minds gathered to discuss humanity's most pressing challenges. One standout talk highlighted a sobering truth: our food system, especially animal agriculture, is pushing us beyond 5 of Earth's 11 natural boundaries. Crucially, we can't meet the #Paris #climate #goals without addressing the role of food production. But there's hope in #protein diversification and embracing innovative food solutions... https://lnkd.in/d6nn9hbX Thomas Manandhar-Richardson Effective Altruism Alternative Proteins Association

We loved this report by Green Alliance on fixing #UK's broken food system. To tackle the challenge, we need to rethink how we use our farmland. But what’s the right path forward? Agroecology everywhere? Paying farmers to rewild parts of their land? Self-sufficiency vs. reliance on imports? Meat reduction to cut emissions? Wildlife decline vs. the drive for Net Zero? It’s a tricky balance with no one-size-fits-all solution, but the report sketches five land use scenarios to spark the conversation. Which path do you think the UK should prioritise? https://lnkd.in/e68iba3U Thomas Manandhar-Richardson
