Big company or small company, that's what it means to me! Changing jobs from a large to a small company is a significant transition in a person's career path. This transition often involves changing company culture, job responsibilities, and growth opportunities. For my part, I decided to make this transition in my work life last year. From a company with several thousand employees to one with less than 50. Moving from a large company to a small one, I have often experienced a closer and more collaborative work environment, where tasks can be more varied and decision-making more agile. Direct business impact can be more palpable in a small company than in a large one. If something goes wrong, the tension can be cut with a knife, while the organizational structure can limit individual autonomy and visibility. No, I don't think this change is for everyone, but I agree with my decision. I was looking for an article like this a year ago, thinking, am I doing the right thing? Am I ruining my career? So here are the differences that I discovered in my first year in a small company. Organizational Culture: - In a large company, the culture may be more formal and structured, while in a small company, it is usually closer and more flexible. Work Environment: - In a large company, the environment may be more impersonal due to the large number of employees, while collaboration and direct contact are encouraged in a small company. Responsibilities and Variety of Tasks: - In a small company, employees are likely to take on more tasks and responsibilities than in a large company, where functions tend to be more specialized. Job Stability: - Larger companies tend to offer more excellent job stability and benefits, while smaller companies may involve greater risk and opportunities for rapid growth. Personal Impact: - Working in a small company can directly contribute to the business's success. Singapore has always held a special place in my career and life journey. Little did I know that my temporary visit to India in 2018 would turn into a longer stay due to personal circumstances. But everything happens for a reason, and reuniting with my son made it all worth it. I returned to JLL for the 4th time, which provided financial stability and helped me settle down. Like many others, COVID-19 forced me to rethink my next steps. That's when Arus Info was born in 2021. Starting with just four engineers and one client, we now have a team of 63 members and have served 20+ clients. The most satisfying aspect of the last three years were the number of opportunities we were able to create to make difference in people's life. I am very proud of some of our initiatives such as #BuildYourBuddy #Freshcots that provides opportunities to entry level job seekers in IT despite the challenging market conditions. Now, I'm back in Singapore to grow our business and take on the challenge of business development. It's a new role, which I have not mastered it for sure. However, as a competitive person, I'm excited to take on these challenges head-on. One thing I've reaffirmed in the past three years of running a business, which is against popular belief, is that honesty and straightforwardness have a special place in business. Generational diversity is an often-overlooked component of D&I.   The modern-day workforce needs the experience and wisdom of older heads and the vitality and fresh ideas of the young. Research by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) has shown that 83% of global leaders recognize the value of cross-generational outputs, for growth and sustainable success.    The emerging challenge, however, is to attract new talent into the tech sector.    A recent article from Fortune states that only 21% of 2024 graduates applied to technology firms. Stepping Out: A Tale of Two Graduations (1990s vs. 2020s) - A Gen X Perspective 🤔 💭 As a Gen Xer who graduated from university in the UK in the early 1990s, I can personally attest to the dramatic shift in the world of work. Landing a spot on a graduate program at a global bank felt like securing a golden ticket. The emphasis was on stability and climbing the corporate ladder within a single company. The internet was a novelty, and the future, while promising, seemed to unfold at a slower pace (and no distracting smartphones or social media!) 💨 Fast forward to today, and I find myself on the other side of the table, delivering training and development programs to B2B clients in Japan. The landscape for graduates, particularly those entering the workforce in 2024 like many Gen Zs here, is vastly different. 🗾 Japanese society, traditionally known for its rigid hierarchies and long working hours, is slowly embracing change. While the concept of "lifetime employment" still holds some weight, graduates are increasingly prioritizing work-life balance and a healthy company culture. Here, too, the gig economy is making inroads, demanding a focus on adaptability and self-marketing. 👨💼 👩💼 From my experience of arranging training programs for B2B clients in Japan, it's clear that the most valuable skills for graduates in the 2020s are a blend of the traditional and the new. A strong academic foundation remains important, but it's coupled with the need for digital literacy, critical thinking, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment. Communication skills, however, transcend language barriers. The ability to articulate ideas clearly and concisely, regardless of the medium, is paramount. 🚀 The bygone era of the "job for life" may be over, but the opportunities for personal growth and innovation are boundless. Graduates today, whether in Japan, the UK, or anywhere else, must embrace lifelong learning and agility to thrive in this dynamic landscape.
