**Navigating Layoffs: Turning Challenges into Opportunities** Lately, I've seen numerous posts about layoffs and unemployment on LinkedIn. I've also experienced this a couple of times in my short career, and a lot of thoughts flood your mind that day, especially if this is your first one. It's an inevitable reality in the software job market—sooner or later, most of us will face it. In the end, it is about business, making some money, and not much related to the talent and skillsets. However, I believe that, that period of job hunting after a layoff can feel like an entrepreneurial journey. You find yourself selling your time, efforts, energy, and skillsets for a price. During this time, you learn a lot and have the opportunity to upgrade yourself as a product by acquiring new skills. It makes you work harder than in any other job, with a renewed sense of ownership and purpose. Today’s Daily Joy… Layoffs are difficult. Layoffs are inevitable. How are you going to manage your career journey in the face of a layoff? Remember, you’re the one person who cares most about your career, so focus on what you can control. If you were impacted, once you’re ready to get out there to start your job search, one word….NETWORK! It works! A few tools that may help jumpstart your job search; Teal, Otta.com, goodpeople. For me, I went with the basic McGyver approach and used a simple sheet (and some gum and string). DM me if you would like a copy! If you have a job, reach out to those you know who are impacted to offer support, reshare or comment for reach (CRF) when you see job postings on LI. Hopefully you won’t find yourself on the impacted side, but if and when you do, you will want others to do the same for you. If you are affected by layoffs, your first thought might be to refresh your resume and start applying for jobs. While this is important and you will need to do it eventually, it is not the most crucial first step. After being laid off, there will be a lot going on in your mind. You might be worried about what will happen next and how long it will take to find another job. These thoughts can lead to many questions and significant anxiety. If you immediately start applying for new jobs and don't hear back from recruiters, your self-confidence can take a nosedive. Therefore, the most important thing before diving into job applications is to find a way to manage the risks, fears, and anxiety. The best method I use involves these three steps: 1. List all the bad things that you think might happen. 2. Come up with simple ideas on how you can prevent them from happening. 3. Plan what you will do if they do happen. Ugh! Even more mass layoffs are hitting hard across so many sectors right now. I truly believe this is just the beginning of it too. I hope I’m wrong.. It sucks. It’s scary. It’s brutal! But with these unprecedented cutbacks, come new opportunities. If you're struggling to find work in today’s market, it’s crucial to re-evaluate your options—sometimes a career pivot is necessary. After 20 successful years in recruiting, I’ve transitioned to coaching, and I absolutely love it. Do I miss recruiting? Sure. Do I still search for roles that fit me? Absolutely. But coaching allows me to help job seekers in a similar way, and that’s incredibly rewarding. What saved me from the fate many recruiters are facing today was my willingness to embrace change and adapt early. It’s a tough market, but being open to change is key to surviving and thriving.
