In the spirit of Black History Month, it's pivotal for us as leaders to introspect and acknowledge the significant impact we can have in dismantling systemic racism within our organizations and communities. Leadership extends beyond achieving business objectives; it encompasses fostering a culture where diversity is celebrated, and inclusivity is the norm. The failures of racism in leadership not only undermine the potential of talented individuals but also hinder the collective growth and innovation of our organizations. As leaders, we have the responsibility to challenge ingrained biases, educate ourselves and our teams, and advocate for policies that promote equity and inclusion at every level. Here's a tip: Lead by example. Show your commitment to diversity and inclusion through your actions, decisions, and the way you empower others. Something to try: Mentor or sponsor individuals from underrepresented groups within your professional network. I urge all leaders to reflect on their role in creating a more just and equitable world. How will you leverage your influence to make a difference? #LeadershipMatters #InclusionInAction #BlackHistoryMonth #BeTheChange #DiversityInLeadership

Proud to share my latest Flexa blog post for Black Leaders Awareness Day today! In the last 4 years, we have definitely seen inconsistent levels of success in efforts to deliver a change to the experiences and representation of black people in leadership. In this Q&A, I look at different ways organisations can REALLY empower and support black leaders. From tackling unconscious bias and enhancing mentorship programs to ensuring black representation at all levels of management, this article covers practical strategies for fostering inclusive workplaces. And remember, it's not all about big displays on Social Media for Black History month... "Creating a more inclusive culture looks like actively celebrating the achievements and contributions of black leaders as much as you do for others." It's Juneteenth, a day to reflect on the importance of cultural competency in organizations. Are you part of a workplace that values and respects this holiday? Sharing a personal experience, I once encountered a situation where I was asked to consult (White) senior leadership on Black History Month decorations. The irony of seeking guidance from a senior marketing leader who was unaware highlighted the need for inclusive practices. How can we foster more inclusive practices in organizations where cultural competency is currently low? #Juneteenth #CulturalCompetency #DiversityandInclusion

From the Classroom to the Boardroom – Part 1: My Early Leadership Journey As we celebrate Black History Month, I want to take you on a journey—a series reflecting on my personal experience as a Black woman navigating leadership, from childhood to the boardroom. This three-part series, “From the Classroom to the Boardroom,” will focus on how I’ve reclaimed my narrative and led without compromise. When I was just 10 years old, I was called into my headteacher’s office—again—for talking too much. But instead of a typical reprimand, I received advice that would stick with me for life: “Delreita, you’re a very bright girl and you could do well in life, but you’re going to have to work twice as hard as your white peers to achieve half of their success.” At that age, I didn’t fully grasp the weight of those words, but they stayed with me. Soon after, a teacher suggested I apply to Wolverhampton Girls' High School , a grammar school that meant leaving my friends and community behind. My parents, in an incredible act of trust, allowed me to make the decision. I chose to apply, and that decision turned out to be one of the most significant of my life. Being thrust into a new world where I was often the only one who looked like me was my first real lesson in resilience, adaptability, and determination—all traits that have shaped my leadership journey. Looking back, I realize that decision taught me how to rise to challenges, even when the path wasn’t clear. That moment laid the foundation for the strength I would need as a Black woman in leadership. 💡 Leadership isn’t always about being ready; it’s about rising to the challenge when the moment calls. 💡 What early decisions have shaped your leadership journey? Share your story in the comments, and let’s inspire each other to rise to new challenges. 💬👇🏾 #BlackHistoryMonth #IntersectionalLeadership #FromTheClassroomToTheBoardroom #ReclaimingMyNarrative #WomenInLeadership #ResilienceInLeadership #BlackWomenLead #LeadershipJourney
