A new goal ‼️‼️ Mary pulled out her pen and her mini journal from her tote bag. She began scanning her previous month's goals and plans. With a smile on her cheeks, she accomplished almost all of her goals from the previous months. Now, it's time for her to list out her New Month goals, since it's New May, of course! She calmly penned down her goals as she wrote about her academic, financial, career, personal development, and social goals. Shortly afterward, she paused suddenly and began to ponder on something she was missing. Can you guess? **** If you guessed right, I owe you a lollipop. 🍭 It's about her health and wellness goals. Perhaps you are wondering about how this fits into goal-setting. Let's take a look at what the health and wellness goal is all about. 💜 A health and wellness goal is simply a specific and actionable plan aimed at improving your health. This goal can vary depending on individual needs and choices. 💜 It focuses more on preventive measures and positive lifestyle changes to optimize physical, mental, and emotional health. 💜 By setting and pursuing health and wellness goals, we can take an active role in managing our health and improving our quality of life. Midnight Moments: A Wake-Up Call for Self-Development. I’m no stranger to 2-5 a.m wake-up calls. Those early hours are my time to reflect, study, and plan. Recently, I stumbled on an insight during Bible study that I just had to write down. But when I grabbed my pen, it was empty—no ink, just a hollow shell. Frustrating? Absolutely. In that moment, I had a powerful realization: “Build content; self-develop.” How often do we focus on presenting a surface level achievement with polished exteriors—social media profiles, career accomplishments—while neglecting the real, internal work? Imagine going into an interview unprepared or building a future without a strong foundation. Self-development is about strengthening what’s within, cultivating resilience, character, and clarity when no one else is watching. This cuts across every area of our lives! So, let’s prioritize internal growth. It becomes our bragging right. Let’s build internal structures and capacity as we invest in resilience, emotional intelligence, and mental agility. When Taylor County officials told residents to write their name and birthdate on their leg with a permanent marker, it wasn't just a scare tactic—it was a stark reality check. The message? This storm might be your last. Fear Appeal in Action This jarring directive is a prime example of Fear Appeal in communication, directly linked to Protection Motivation Theory (PMT). PMT illuminates how people respond to fear-based messages, weighing the threat's severity against their ability to protect themselves. In this case:Threat: Potential death Solution: Immediate evacuation! It's a bold approach for county officials, but in critical moments, it can be the catalyst someone needs to take life-saving action. I often grapple with these delicate balances. How do we craft messages that convey urgency without paralyzing people with fear? This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of clear, honest communication—especially when lives hang in the balance. Fear appeals, when used judiciously, can be incredibly effective in crisis communication. They can cut through the noise and prompt immediate action. However, it's crucial to pair them with clear, ACTIONABLE steps to avoid overwhelming the audience. For most, evacuation is possible, but we must also remember to care for our most poor and most vulnerable citizens (often older adults) who cannot follow the mandate without help, and may not even hear it. We must remember that sometimes, the most powerful message -- coupled with action -- is the one that makes us uncomfortable.
