South Sudanese citizens face challenges accessing and identifying high-quality, credible information, particularly on social media. USAID’s Sustainable Independent Media Activity's Vibrant Information Barometer (VIBE) report found that much of the country has low levels of media literacy and digital literacy, and that journalists need capacity-building to improve the quality of information being published and produced. Access to credible, accurate, and reliable information anywhere in the world requires a government that secures press freedom, uses public revenue to fund quality affordable education, and pays public school teachers on time: https://bit.ly/3yo8gUA via: IREX

Fake news and misinformation not only disrupt public discourse but also strain personal relationships, particularly among younger people. A study by the Nürnberg Institut für Marktentscheidungen among the German-speaking population found that 40% of those under 40 experienced conflicts in their families or social circles due to disinformation. To combat this, promote media literacy, fact-check before sharing, and encourage open, informed discussions. Awareness and proactive steps can mitigate the damage caused by misinformation in our personal and societal spheres. 📷 #defyhatenow Africa Fact Checking Fellowship (AFF) Cameroon & Ethiopia

Kenya is facing devastating floods. In a crisis like this, accurate and trustworthy information can make the difference between life and death. Our Kenya Media Landscape Guide, developed with DW Akademie, helps responders ensure that information reaches people through channels they use and trust. Launched today at our Member Spotlight event – an exclusive learning exchange for CDAC members – the guide equips responders with key insights: 📻 Radio & TV are the most used and trusted channels – including community and refugee-focused radio stations and podcasts. 🗣️ Don't forget that 60+ languages are spoken in Kenya, including vernacular languages – invest in translation to build trust and reach the right people. 🚫 Combatting misinformation is critical, with ‘fake news’, bias and inadequate coverage of critical issues key concerns. 📱 Bridging the digital divide between urban and rural areas is vital, as is using a range of channels to reach everyone. Are you creating guidance, tools, and resources for country-level teams? Can you measure how usable these resources are? 🤔 In 2021, the Global Child Protection Area of Responsibility (CP AoR) and the Global Education Cluster (GEC), in partnership with Translators without Borders, conducted research in Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Mozambique. The findings highlighted significant challenges that staff, volunteers, and local actors face in accessing and understanding these resources. Many respondents found guidance, tools and resources developed at the global level difficult to access and often had to read it multiple times to understand it.
