A lot of people want to become an expert, or desire to be recognised as one at the very least. But what does it take to become an expert in the diverse field of Communications and Public Relations? Someone asked a question recently on whether there’s a cheat sheet to becoming an expert in Comms/ PR. The question make me chuckle but it also made me realise that people don’t really understand that expertise takes time. You do have to go through your process and master the core competencies required in the Comms function. You can get my full answer to this question here - https://lnkd.in/eSKY6nPN #Communications

Dear Comms Professionals, winging it will not bring you the results and professional respect that you desire. I’ve been on the ‘winging it, go with your intuition’ side and I’ve also been on the side of learning and applying established theory and frameworks and I can tell you confidently that my results are exponentially different. To do Communications properly, there are many things you cannot wing, you just have to be taught. That is why I really love this video on Sola Abulu & Associates (SA&A)’s YouTube channel where SA shares 6 things every Communications Manager Should Know. If you cannot watch the full video now, please bookmark it and watch it later. I’ll share some important takeaways I’d like you to pay attention to: - To succeed as a Comms professional, you need to know the rudiments of the trade which includes the Strategic Communications Framework. - There is a technical competence element of Communications which is a function of your knowledge of frameworks and your ability to apply it. This has to be learnt and mastered. I’ll stop there. Please head over to YouTube to watch the full video - https://lnkd.in/ejQQDf_F PS - Sola Abulu (SCMP®) has a LinkedIn Live conversation happening this Friday on the Theory and Practice of Strategic Communication. Is working as a Communications Consultant easier than working for one organisation? I think the answer depends on where your passion lies. But one thing is clear, you really do have to put in the work if you want to succeed as a Comms Consultant. And sometimes, you may also need to carve your own path because there a few places that provide guidelines for Comms Consultants within the African context. That’s one of the reasons why I’ve done this video. To share tips from my professional experience. I touched on what you need to get started, how to get clients and pricing models you can explore. I hope this gives you answers that will make your journey as a Comms Consultant easier. You can watch the full video here - https://lnkd.in/g5czUvSf #Communications

Some people have a perception that if you work in internal communications, you don't need to understand your departments' programs, schemes or policy. This #flashbackfriday we wanted to reshare a very important blog about why internal communicators still need to understand "the business". If you don't understand your business, you won't know what is impacting your key audience - employees. You can read more here: https://lnkd.in/ge_7MJSf #elmcommunications #communications #comms #internalcommunications #internalcommunicators

I'm not sure if this is a controversial topic or not but I think it's a good time to talk about it. Is it really efficient to have only one Comms person in an organisation, especially a large organisation? And if you're the only Comms person in your organisation, how should you approach your work? I decided to talk about this in the latest video on my YouTube channel because I've seen too many Comms professionals being overworked because they are managing Communications with minimal human and financial resources. Through our Strategic Communications course, we've been teaching professionals how to advocate for the resources that they need to succeed in their role. I'm happy some of them have started to implement the tips shared and they are seeing results. But there's definitely more room for change and I hope this video helps you if you're feeling overwhelmed as the only Comms person in your organisation. You can watch the full video here - https://lnkd.in/eSMNmF4R PS - If you have tips to share with any Commsprofessional in this situation, please feel free to share. #Communications

Two years ago I set out as an independent communications consultant. 🎂 Here's my two most important lessons I've learnt in that time: 💡 There is a clear demand and need for strategic communications consultancy and delivery. The organisations who hire, brief, and enable consultants are benefiting from the strategic and commercial value of this work. 💡 As a consultant, you have to be clear on your why. Your positioning, messaging, and decisions about who you will/won't work with all flow from this. What are your top lessons from being an independent communications consultant? ----- #CorporateCommunications #InternalCommunications #CommunicationsCoaching
