Juneteenth is the oldest nationally/internationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas, a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long over due. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society. Happy Juneteenth!!

Over the last week, I've been asked questions that led me to deeply reflect on my own perspective and Native American historical truth. The first question was, "What do Native Americans think about the 4th of July?" The second, more nuanced, was about Theodore Roosevelt. While many Americans celebrate the 4th of July with pride, it’s essential to recognize that this date does not reflect the true history and struggles of Native Americans. For many, it is a reminder of colonialism, loss, and ongoing injustices. As for Theodore Roosevelt, though he is often hailed as a great leader, his policies towards Native Americans were detrimental. He forced Native American men to cut their hair and assimilate into colonial ideals of what it meant to be American. This policy was part of a broader agenda to erase Native American cultures and identities, labeling those who resisted as "savages." These reflections are crucial in understanding the complex and often painful history of Native Americans, urging us to acknowledge and respect the diverse perspectives that shape our collective history. #HistoryMatters #NativeAmerican
