#History On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that all people being held as slaves would henceforth be free. Two years later, on January 31, 1865, the 13th Amendment was passed by Congress. Yet, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that Union soldiers finally arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, with the long-awaited news of freedom. This day, now celebrated as #Juneteenth, also known as Jubilee Day, commemorates the emancipation of African American slaves. While we celebrate this monumental day, it’s important to recognize that June 19th, 1865, was not the day that all slaves were freed. Thank you, Dr. Harris, for sharing this important information. Yes it's shocking and disturbing for those who are not aware, but unfortunately not surprising. It's particularly important for whites (like me) to lean into awareness, learn to deal with the multi-faceted complexity of this history and connect the dots to current times. Foundational education, awareness and recognition helps us to see and acknowledge the continued systemic and systematic racism and othering that is ever-present. It helps us recognize the pervasive micro-aggressions that exist and that we unwittingly and ignorantly perpetrate on others. It helps us to lean into our own complicity, our own "work" to come to terms with these issues within ourselves, our families, our communities, and our countries. That helps us to learn to value every human life, work to eradicate all forms of "othering", build and support equitable policies, laws, systems, and programs. And it helps us to learn and actively engage in the work of allyship. For the sake of all of us because humanity is the better for it. #equityinclusiondiversity #socialjustice #humankindness #allyship

The Human Zoo in Paris, 1905. A chilling reminder of history when Black people—and other marginalized groups—were exhibited as star attractions, reduced to mere spectacles for the gaze of white European and American audiences. This was not an isolated event. From Paris to New York, human zoos showcased Black Africans and Indigenous Black Americans in dehumanizing displays, laying bare the depths of colonial ideologies and racial exploitation. Even today, it often seems that Black people are only applauded or accepted when we conform to roles of entertainment or servitude—when we are in “step-and-fetch-it” mode. This truth must serve as a call to honor the humanity that was denied, to remember what was done, and to ensure history never repeats itself. Our upcoming lecture will interpret the "First Emancipation," when thousands of people of African heritage secured freedom by the end of the 18th century.
