Joseph Zorek, PharmD, BCGP, FNAP continues sharing content from his book, as the conversation around #IPE continues during National Interprofessional Healthcare Month! Panels highlighting multiple providers with more than one person speaking were always a enjoyable challenge. At our Community Care Center board meeting last week, Dr. Baldwin Smith, retired pediatric neurologist, shared a recent article from JAMA "Medicine-Both a Science (Care) and an Art (CARE)" (Strange TJ, Castellanos MR. Medicine-Both a Science (Care) and an Art (CARE). JAMA. 2024 Apr 23;331(16):1357-1358. doi: 10.1001/jama.2024.2508. PMID: 38568598). The authors emphasize that with technological advancements transforming medical care, "the timeless art of medicine (compassion and caring) remains a foundational aspect of patient-centered health care" (Trzeciak & Mazzarelli, 2019). The qualities of compassion, assistance, active listening, respect, and empathy "not only contribute to better patient outcomes and increased satisfaction, but also play a critical role in improving overall well-being" (Malenfant et al, 2022). CARE (compassion, assistance, respect, and empathy) - an acronym to guide all those providing medical care in a fast-paced, rapidly changing world.

Sarah Wittry, hospice and palliative care physician, continues in this episode of "Stand Up (for) Doctors!"...“I find it to be the most continuously positive thing for me to do!” MaryAnn Wilbur, gynecology oncology surgeon by training, shares, “You have value just because you are you; that is really important for people to hear! We discuss the practice of medicine regarding both staying and leaving. MaryAnn shares what prompted her to leave clinical work and write her book, “The Doctor Is No Longer In: conversations with physicians about why they are quitting.” Sarah shares her story of burnout, how she moved forward, and how she is empowering other physician moms who are staying in medicine. MaryAnn says of her advocacy mission, “I do this because I want it to work…for all of us. This is a story of hope and future and progress and what we are going to do to make things better!” Sarah adds, “You always have more choices than you think you do. It’s possible to create a life that really fills you up and lets you do the things you want to do.” MaryAnn describes characteristics that make physicians particularly vulnerable to burnout. She explains the term “enmeshment,” and offers her personal story. Sarah describes how she had all the risk factors for burnout, the perfect storm, and how it affected her at work and at home. It’s encouraging to finally see an article that thoughtfully addresses the issues we, as Physician Associates, have been advocating for. The message is both respectful and constructive, reflecting the values we hold dear in our profession. Collaboration is at the heart of our work, and it’s through teamwork that we can expand access to care and serve more patients, especially those in underserved communities. By working together, Physician Associates and Physicians, as well as other healthcare professionals can improve patient outcomes and create a more effective and responsive healthcare system. As an oncologist, the foundational relationship that I have with a patient is based on mutual trust, which allows me to deliver care. When I see patients, I ask about more than their symptoms. I want to know about their experience with the valet parking, the cafeteria, their inpatient hospital room.
