I had the distinct pleasure of joining the TR2050 session in Dubai remotely last week and the privilege of presenting on the Future of Rewards along with my good friend Michael Piker 🏳️🌈 to a group of exceptional Total Reward thought-leaders. We had a robust discussion, and many debates on what the future may hold. Initially we discussed in depth the emerging trends that will impact the future, and which of them were certain or still evolving. These included the Future of Work, Post-pandemic Implications, Rise of Generative AI, Regulatory Changes and Demographic Shifts & Talent Shortages. We are in a period of uncertainty, where the future is unclear. Discussing potential future scenarios – say 10 years into the future – helps us to practically envision the possibilities. While the future is uncertain, scenario building is useful as it helps us shape directional steps and solutions which can be tested. Some of the scenarios I presented, and we debated included: · With the expected shift from a jobs-based to skill-based labor market, will the extended non-traditional workforce (eg., gig, contract, project etc.,) (1) have more critical skills than the permanent workforce (2) be more critical and become actively managed by HR and Reward professionals (3) be offered benefits to attract and retain them? · Will companies actively design career paths across both the permanent and non-traditional workforces and design in Wellbeing by enabling desired work intensity flex - high, medium, or low? · As transparency becomes more common-place, will company social networks openly and transparently capture feedback on performance, skill levels, development and input to comp decisions? · For the permanent workforce, will organizations start market-pricing (e.g., setting salary ranges) based on Regional and/or Global market data? · Will compensation shift away from long-term incentives towards short-term incentives and recognition as people’s career move more fluidly between permanent and non-traditional workforces (gig, contract, etc.,)? · Will we start seeing new benefits related to climate change as extreme weather events become more common place? E.g., high grade portable masks, air purifiers, specialized home insurance etc., These were among a few of the topics that we discussed and debated. We are in a period of significant change as organizations face the future of work, AI, technology changes, and changing demographics, to name a few.
