This week, our focus is on Belfast, where Urban Air Mobility services could significantly enhance local sustainability and economic growth. With the potential for five #UAM routes, the system may require up to 24 aircraft, indicating there are some dense routes. Notably, these services could inject £3.6 million annually into the local economy by saving significant travel time — equivalent to returning 46 years worth of time to commuters. We note that a remarkable 95% of these routes are currently dominated by car journeys. While our calculations are still preliminary, by developing eVTOL services, Belfast has the potential to eliminate 195,000 car journeys each year, which would cut annual carbon emissions from vehicles by 2,250 tonnes. This shift not only supports environmental goals but also bolsters economic benefits for the city. How can Melbourne lead the way in sustainable urban air mobility? Microflite Aviation, operator of the Melbourne heliport, is teaming up with Skyportz® to develop new vertiport sites for electric air taxis in Melbourne. With plans to replace its tourism helicopter fleet with zero-emissions electric air taxis, Microflite is working with key stakeholders, including the soon-to-be-elected Lord Mayor and the Victorian government, to expand landing options along the Yarra River. Chief Operating Officer Rodney Higgins emphasized the need for aviation to contribute to environmental goals, while Skyportz CEO Clem Newton-Brown OAM highlighted Melbourne’s potential to be a pioneer in advanced air mobility. Skyportz has already developed a vertiport concept at Batman Park and is identifying other sites for a network of vertistops across the city, which could include Southern Cross Station and the sports precinct. As Melbourne embraces electric aviation, what impact will this transformation have on urban transport? Archer Aviation has announced exciting plans to launch an air mobility network connecting five key locations across the San Francisco Bay Area. These strategic locations include South San Francisco, Napa, San Jose, Oakland, and Livermore. This innovative network is set to revolutionize regional connectivity by reducing typical one-to-two-hour drives to a swift 10 to 20-minute flight. To anchor this network, Archer has partnered with Kilroy Realty Corporation, a leading U.S. landlord and developer. Kilroy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Archer, designating Kilroy Oyster Point—a 50-acre waterfront campus in South San Francisco—as a critical hub for the planned urban air mobility (UAM) network. This mixed-use campus, located in the heart of the Bay Area biotech ecosystem, is poised to become a key takeoff and landing site, seamlessly connecting with Archer's other planned vertiport locations. Bryan Bernhard, Archer’s Chief Growth & Infrastructure Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "We’re thrilled to collaborate with Kilroy on developing infrastructure to support Archer’s air mobility service and laying the foundation for a robust network of landing sites throughout the Bay Area." Kilroy Realty, known for its commitment to sustainability, innovation, and design, is set to be the first U.S. developer to integrate eVTOL operations into its properties. The MOU also includes plans for the development of an Archer “Sea Portal” at Kilroy Oyster Point. This waterfront mobility hub will provide electric ferry services alongside eVTOL operations, all powered by renewable energy, offering unparalleled air and sea-based transportation options to campus employees. Angela Aman, Kilroy’s CEO, remarked, "We believe that this innovative and sustainable service has the potential to provide exceptional convenience and optionality to current and future tenants at the project, further differentiating Kilroy Oyster Point within the South San Francisco market." The initial launch location at Kilroy Oyster Point could open as early as late next year, with further expansion into other locations within Kilroy’s portfolio under consideration. Archer and an SFO-based realty company Kilroy Realty Corporation, wanting #regionalairmobility at its new development at Oyster Bay, partnered to develop a regional #advancedairmobility network surrounding San Francisco. This is interesting because it is not the #urbanairmobility often touted for cities. It is designed to connect from a new vertiport (will it be the only one in SFO and how will you get there?) to destinations otherwise needed a one-to-two hour drive where Archer already has facilities. I assume those are Signature Aviation facilities at #airports. I'm curious on how the routes were decided and whether community planners, who seemed to be the only ones actively working on routes during last years Air Taxi World Congress in SFO. Final question. What are the costs to use the service? https://lnkd.in/gUp8iAf6.

In Scotland’s remote Orkney Archipelago, the coastal hub of Kirkwall is renowned for its long links to the past. The biggest town in the region’s 70-plus islands is almost 1,000 years old, and the gateway to seven UNESCO-listed neolithic ruins dating back around 5,000 years. But Kirkwall is also evolving as a centre for the future. Its airport hosts the UK’s first low-carbon aero research precinct, the Sustainable Aviation Test Environment (SATE), established in 2020 to help develop and evaluate zero-emission technologies and future concepts for regional aircraft. As a remote location critically reliant on short-range flights, there’s probably no more apt base for such a programme than the heart of the Orkneys. Nor was there a better time to rethink the future than during the pandemic.
