How Do People Do It? Be something other than what they truly are? Herman Melville said, "It’s Better to Fail in Originality, Than to Succeed in Imitation." Why do my team come to speak with you regarding certain matters, why don't they trust me? - This is a question I got from a colleague I remember supporting this leader back in 2018, he had a terrible habit of discussing their employees with other management. This was the culture He excused this as something managers did when they chilled together and advised each other on the next course of action. It wasn't collaboration, it was gossip. It didn't build it tore the department apart as they'd make comments and laugh at employees for weeks that followed None of them were trusted by their team It felt like they had actually built resentment from their team. This is the advice I gave him and use with my clients in leadership and marketing Authenticity is an Advantage Ditch the fake smile (they see through it) and lead with authenticity. To get results you need to support your people (team or customer), not gossip with management, especially at their expense. Here are 3 compelling reasons why authenticity is the key to unlocking trust, engagement, and loyalty: 1. Trust Builder → Authentic leaders foster trust with their audience, creating a loyal community. 2. Engagement Igniter → Authentic content resonates with audiences, sparking meaningful conversations. 3. Loyalty Lock → Authentic leaders build loyal followings, driving long-term growth. In a world or company where everyone's trying to stand out, authenticity is the ultimate differentiator. So, be brave, be vulnerable, and be you. Do you agree? Perfect example of how much our actions shape workplace culture. To add to your point, I feel authenticity requires alignment between values, behavior, and communication. I’ve seen leaders who genuinely want to build trust but inadvertently erode it by failing to act consistently with their values. It’s not just about avoiding gossip but also ensuring actions match promises, like delivering on commitments or creating safe spaces for feedback. Authenticity without follow-through becomes a hollow gesture. I also love your point about vulnerability—it’s key. Interestingly, i remember reading about a research from HBR found that vulnerability-based trust leads to higher team performance because it builds psychological safety. But vulnerability without accountability can lead to the perception of weakness. Balancing both is the real challenge for leaders.
You attract what you radiate and people will know after a certain time if you are real. The problem is that when we are trying to be somebody else we express called "secondary feelings", authentic is "primary", thats why you can feel when somebody is "fake" standing in front of you.
Authenticity really is a game-changer . When we show up as our true selves, it builds loyalty, engagement, and stronger connections.

3wWhy do you think we like standing out until we actually have to stand out? Why does society encourage it until they see it then be against it calling it names like weird?
